Port-Le-Grand: Marshland and Heritage in the Lower Somme
Accommodation in Port-Le-Grand
Port-Le-Grand combines the marshland of the lower Somme with traces from several historical periods. The Chemin du chalet de Blanquetaque crosses the marsh to an architecturally unusual chalet. Around the Château de Bonance, the historical themes range from Gallo-Roman and Merovingian traces to finds discovered in 1846. The tradition associated with Saint Honoré is also part of the town’s history. If you are looking for a destination where the landscape, walking trails and historical connections offer different points of interest, Port-Le-Grand provides a distinctive setting for this.
Marshland and Natural Environment
In Port-Le-Grand, the Chemin du chalet de Blanquetaque crosses the marshland of the lower Somme to an architecturally unusual chalet. The broader landscape can be seen in the Basse vallée de la Somme area: it covers 1,426 hectares and includes six municipalities, among them Port-Le-Grand. Its ecological importance relates to birdlife, habitats and flora.
The trail and the area offer two different perspectives: the Chemin crosses the marsh to a building, while the Basse vallée de la Somme refers to a natural area spanning several municipalities. This makes it possible to consider the trail’s specific connection to the landscape alongside the broader ecological context.
Walking Trails with Different Landscape Settings
La Trie Enchantée is a designated walking trail in Port-Le-Grand. The route passes through the Trie valley in the Baie de Somme Picardie Maritime Regional Nature Park. These are different landscape settings: the Chemin du chalet de Blanquetaque is associated with the marshland of the lower Somme and the chalet, while La Trie Enchantée is associated with the Trie valley and the nature park. If you are planning a walk, you can check local trail conditions beforehand, as they may change.
The Chalet and Local History
The Chalet de Blanquetaque was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the Count d’Hardivilliers and specially equipped for woodcock hunting. Its unusual architecture is thus linked to a clearly specified historical purpose. Port-Le-Grand is also regarded as the birthplace of Saint Honoré, who became Bishop of Amiens in 554 or 566.
Archaeological Traces at the Château de Bonance
The historical evidence at the Château de Bonance spans several periods. In 1846, during the creation of a lawn in front of the château, the foundations of 21 adjoining houses were discovered. The foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple were also found in the château’s woods. A Benedictine nunnery named after Sainte Austreberthe is said to have stood on them during the Merovingian period; it was destroyed by the Normans in the 9th century.
The site was continuously inhabited from the Gallic era through the Middle Ages. The year 1846 refers to when the foundations of the houses were discovered; the site’s history of settlement, by contrast, spans a much longer period. Together with the history of the chalet, Bonance shows that the town’s historical connections extend across different eras.
