Béalcourt: Church, Chapel and Dolmen
Accommodation in Béalcourt
Béalcourt offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, with surviving elements from the early 13th century; the Chapelle de la Vierge, with its statue of Notre-Dame de Mons; the Dolmen de Valibeau; as well as cycling and fishing on the Authie. If you are looking for a hotel in Béalcourt, you can first consider whether church architecture and local history, the dolmen or an activity should be the main focus of your trip. These themes range from architectural history and protected works of art to a named megalith and activities on the river and cycling route.
Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption stands outside the village of Béalcourt; it was formerly located in the now-vanished village of Mons. Its current location and its former location in Mons are two distinct geographical references in the church's history. The church preserves remains from the early 13th century, including a single-shaft round pier in the nave and capitals in the choir. A capital is the upper part of a column or pier. Here, the capitals belong to the choir, while the round pier is in the nave. The church is built of ashlar and was restored in the 16th century. The early dating of the remains and the later restoration refer to different periods: the restoration does not date the surviving elements from the early 13th century. Its location, material and architectural history give the church its own historical significance.
Chapelle de la Vierge and main altar
The Chapelle de la Vierge is attached to the church. It has been listed as a historic monument since 4 March 1926. The chapel houses the statue of Notre-Dame de Mons, which hangs from a vault pendant. Since 21 January 1980, the statue has been classified as a protected heritage object. The main altar ensemble has been classified as a protected object since the same date. Its components include La Sainte Famille, the statue Le Sauveur du Monde, the Virgin and Child with an outspread bird, the Eternal Father, the altar base and other parts. The ensemble's tabernacle is recorded as stolen. The dates therefore apply to different objects: 1926 to the chapel, and 1980 to the statue and the main altar ensemble. The chapel, statue and main altar are distinct points of reference in Béalcourt's church history.
Dolmen de Valibeau
The Dolmen de Valibeau, also called the Dolmen de Valibout, is a megalith at the edge of Béalcourt on the road towards Hezeucourt. The two names refer to the same dolmen, not to two different destinations. It is now toppled; it formerly rested on three other stones. This clearly distinguishes its present form from its earlier arrangement. This change is a characteristic detail of local history: the dolmen can be described not only by its two names but also by the change in the arrangement of its stones. This sets it apart from the church's buildings and furnishings as a historical point of interest.
Cycling and fishing
Cycling and fishing offer different ways to explore the area. The Le Sart Galant cycling route passes through Béalcourt. The Béalcourt–Le Frohen fishing association offers fishing stretches on the Authie, a first-category river. One activity is thus described as a cycling route through Béalcourt, while the other is a fishing opportunity on the river. The activities are different in nature, so you can choose the focus of your trip accordingly. Before travelling, check the latest information about the route or fishing opportunities if either is important to your plans.
