Grand-Laviers: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Grand-Laviers
The Val de Grand-Laviers, also known as the Val aux Lépreux, is a small dry valley with no permanent watercourse. It stretches for 3 km to the Somme Valley. Its location on the valley floor and plateau, together with the vegetation of limestone-rich habitats, gives it remarkable ecological potential.
Nature and walks
The Réserve Ornithologique Baie de Somme - Grand-Laviers can be visited independently and offers three circular trails: the short yellow trail is listed as taking 45 minutes, the medium green trail 1 hour 30 minutes, and the long red trail 2 hours 30 minutes. The difference between the listed times for the shortest and longest routes is 1 hour 45 minutes; the medium time falls exactly halfway between them. This range makes it easier to choose a walk that fits the time available.
The Réserve Ornithologique de Grand Laviers is also a partner venue of the Festival de l'Oiseau et de la Nature, offering nature outings and activities for children. The programme varies from one edition to the next. If you are planning your visit around a festival event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Hiking trails and navigation
Both hiking trails are rated easy and have an average walking time of 1 hour 30 minutes. The Circuit du tofflet is 4.5 km long, and the Circuit de Buigny is 5.7 km long. This means the routes differ in length by 1.2 km despite having the same average walking time. While the reserve’s circular trails offer different time options, the average walking time for these two hiking trails is the same.
The Circuit du tofflet starts in Grand-Laviers on Rue des Moissons and finishes back in Grand-Laviers. The Circuit de Buigny starts in Grand-Laviers on Route du Val and also finishes there. Neither trail is signposted; the GPX or KML track must be used for each.
Church and historic farmsteads
The roof trusses are visible in the Eglise Saint-Fuscien. Its 16th-century triumphal arch is as wide as the nave. The church opens for unguided visits in summer. As this is a seasonal visiting opportunity, check the current opening days in advance.
Grand-Laviers and its hamlet have several old large farmsteads, including three on Rue de Buigny. They consist of a large dwelling and several agricultural buildings; the village also has smaller old farmsteads. This layout brings residential and agricultural uses together within one farmstead. Some buildings may be privately owned.
For an architectural comparison, the church is notable for a proportion: the triumphal arch is as wide as the nave. By contrast, the farmsteads are defined by their layout of a dwelling and agricultural buildings.
