When choosing a place to stay, La Bazoge offers several different points of interest: architectural history, the history of local transport, culture and outdoor activities. Highlights include Notre-Dame Church, the Croix de Villée, the L’Envol cultural center, the “Les Forges” trail route and a walk by the plan d’eau de Beaumanoir. You can choose where to stay based on whether you are particularly interested in local history, cultural events or outdoor activities.

Church, wayside cross and transport history

The present-day Notre-Dame Church was expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries with a choir and transept. These two additions give its architectural history a specific timeframe. Another historic landmark is the Croix de Villée, the oldest of the 17 crosses and calvaries in La Bazoge. This massive, asymmetrical Latin cross dates back to the Middle Ages. At a crossroads, it marked the turnoff to the village of La Bazoge or to what is now the hamlet of Mortier. The church and the Croix offer different perspectives on local history: at Notre-Dame, the focus is on its architectural additions; at the Croix, on its shape, age and former role as a route marker.

A typical 18th-century weaver’s house now stands at 3 rue du Puits. It adds a different type of building to the historic landmarks. The former tramway bridge also tells a story of its own: it is a remnant of the narrow-gauge local railway that served La Bazoge from 14 August 1915 to 3 October 1943. An 18th-century house and a precisely dated period of railway service thus offer two different perspectives on local history.

Culture at L’Envol

L’Envol is a cultural center near the center of La Bazoge, opened in 2013. It hosts cultural events, performances and film screenings. The range of formats gives you several options if you would like culture to be part of your stay. For specific dates, it is a good idea to check the current program in advance.

Trail route and walk by the water

The 12 km “Les Forges” trail route is certified in Sarthe and associated with La Bazoge. When deciding whether to take on this activity, consider the trail conditions as well as the distance: the route follows technically challenging paths on climbs and certain descents, and the ground is stony in places. Distance and technical difficulty answer different planning questions and should be considered together.

Another option is a walk along the shores of the plan d’eau de Beaumanoir in La Bazoge. These offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors: for “Les Forges,” distance and technical difficulty are key features, while the plan d’eau offers a waterside walk. This can help you plan your day around the type of activity you prefer.
