When planning your trip to Saint-Michel-De-Chavaignes, you can choose from a range of highlights: the “Un chemin, une école” circular walk and cultural and historical attractions such as Église Saint-Michel, the tomb of Hélène Bertaux and art in the village. The walk provides an approximate indication of how long it takes; the church is notable for its building history, the stone used in its construction and a distinctive sequence of images. There are also historic craft traditions and an annual art event. Depending on your interests, you can focus on outdoor activity, architecture, art or local history.

The circular walk and its route markers

The “Un chemin, une école” circular walk is considered an easy hike and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. This approximate duration can help you fit the tour into your day. It follows the slopes of the Vallon de la Tortue and often uses quiet country lanes. The route therefore combines valley slopes with rural roads. It starts in front of École Jacques Yves Cousteau. Yellow markings overlaid with a red diamond indicate the route. As trail conditions can vary, follow the markings on site; if the route changes, the markings there take precedence.

Église Saint-Michel

Église Saint-Michel is protected as a historic monument; it was listed by decree on June 20, 1952. Built in the 12th century, it is made of local sandstone, Roussard sandstone, Grison stone and shell limestone. The wooden panelling above the nave bears a calendar depicting 366 saints, shown either as full figures or busts. The church’s history and sequence of images thus offer two different ways to explore it: through its period of construction and materials, or through its depictions of the saints.

Local history and art in the village

Until the end of the 19th century, Saint-Michel-De-Chavaignes had traditions of hemp weaving and linen production. The heritage trail leads to the tomb of Hélène Bertaux in the cemetery, where she was buried on April 20, 1909. As cemetery access arrangements may change, check before your visit. The annual “Mains d’Art” event celebrates women artists, among other things through the Prix Hélène Bertaux, and features various art forms. Each edition may differ; check the dates for the relevant event if you are making specific plans.

The village sculpture trail includes “Le dragon de Saint-Michel.” The sculpture was made of Roussard sandstone and dates from 2017–2018. Roussard sandstone was also used to build Église Saint-Michel, so this material links sacred architecture with art in the village.

The two activities differ in how they fit into your day: you can allow around 2 hours and 30 minutes for the circular walk, while for “Mains d’Art” you should check the date of the relevant edition.
