Discover Avezé: Heritage and Rural Trails
Accommodation in Avezé
There are two main areas of interest for a trip to Avezé: cultural history and rural landscapes. When looking for a hotel for your stay, first consider whether historic buildings or trails and nature will shape your stay more. Key features include the Église Saint-Pierre, the history of La Tuilerie des Saules, the wet meadows along the Huisne and the network of rural trails.
Cultural history in Avezé
The Église Saint-Pierre was originally a priory church and was classified as a historic monument by decree dated 12 June 1989. The decree dates the monument status; its former role as a priory church is a separate historical point of reference. At the Château de La Prousterie, the architecture reflects the economic boom around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Manoir de La Ponjardière is a small country manor dating from the 15th century and is currently being restored.
The history of La Tuilerie des Saules adds a different time perspective. In 1826, the site had a residential building and a kiln; new buildings were added in 1860. Most of the buildings standing today date from the first quarter of the 20th century, while the factory closed in 1962. The construction dates and the factory’s closure mark different aspects of the site: the development of the buildings on the one hand and its operating history on the other. Taken together, the construction dates range from the 15th and early 16th centuries to building phases at the tile works in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Huisne Valley and rural trails
Extensive wet meadows stretch along both sides of the Huisne, shaping the valley and supporting remarkable biodiversity. Alongside its buildings, the Huisne Valley and its wet meadows form a distinct landscape of interest.
Avezé has a network of rural trails that are particularly popular with hikers from the Sarthe département. The Parcours-découverte d’Avezé is 12.5 kilometres long, can be divided into three sections and passes through the village centre and the surrounding countryside. The trails on the route were selected for their landscape and architectural quality; there is no dedicated waymarking. For planning purposes, the information about the trail network and the route differs: the network provides general hiking options, while the route has a specified length, division into sections and course. Before hiking, check trail conditions and plan your navigation accordingly.
Fishing along the wider stretch of the Huisne
Along the wider stretch of the Huisne between Avezé and La Ferté-Bernard, visitors are invited to fly-fish for brown trout and grayling; population densities are relatively low. This information refers to the river section between the two towns, so bear this geographical scope in mind when planning. Check the applicable rules and any required permits separately before fishing.
