Ruillé-Froid-Fonds: Château Le Puy, Churches and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Ruillé-Froid-Fonds
Ruillé-Froid-Fonds offers a range of options to help plan your trip: 12th-century churches, the buildings and gardens of Château Le Puy, and the Circuit Les Trotteurs loop trail. If you are interested in cultural history, you will find both religious architecture and a château with a history that has developed over several decades. The trail offers a different focus and can be explored on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike.
Churches and religious history
The Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais dates from the 12th century and has preserved its Romanesque architecture. These two details complement one another: the century places the church in time, while its Romanesque architecture describes its architectural character. It offers a tangible point of reference for anyone exploring the town’s medieval history.
A second church is the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Froid-Fonds. It also dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. While the preserved Romanesque architecture stands out at Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais, the Marian dedication and the celebration of the Assumption of Mary are important points of reference at Notre-Dame. A Mass is celebrated there for the occasion on 15 August. If you are travelling specifically for this, it is advisable to confirm the date in advance.
Château Le Puy: building history, chapel and park
The building history of Château Le Puy began around 1650, when François du Puy had the château built on his land in Froidfont. At the end of the 17th century, he had the chapel added to the château. This sequence distinguishes the construction of the château from the later addition of a religious building.
The chapel retains a large altarpiece made of tufa stone and original 18th-century stained-glass windows, which have been restored. The details about stone and glass provide two specific examples of the chapel’s furnishings. Château Le Puy is also listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments (ISMH). The listing covers the buildings of the main courtyard, the large outbuildings, the garden and the park with its hornbeam bower.
The park’s layout can also be described in more detail: it lies between two ponds, which are connected by the moat bordering the garden. The park, ponds and moat are therefore among the described spatial features of the estate.
The outdoor areas—the chapel, park and gardens—are open to visitors from 15 July to 31 August, from 12 noon to 6 pm, and during the European Heritage Days. As access is limited to seasonal time slots, check visiting hours before you travel.
Tourist route and loop trail
Château Le Puy is a stop on the tourist route La Route des Joyaux de la Mayenne. The route links 14 châteaux, abbeys, mills, parks and gardens for visitors to explore. The château visit can therefore be seen as part of a themed route; the Circuit Les Trotteurs, by contrast, is a separate loop trail in Ruillé-Froid-Fonds.
The Circuit Les Trotteurs, loop trail no. 10, is 19 kilometres long. The tourism office estimates that it takes about five hours on foot, three hours on horseback and two hours by mountain bike. All three options are rated moderate. Comparing them shows the difference in time required depending on how you travel, without changing the distance. Check the latest route details before setting out.
