Juigné-Sur-Loire offers two clearly distinct themes to help you plan your trip: architectural and local history, and nature experiences in the Parc des Garennes. The Église Saint Germain, the Moulins de la Masse Rutault and the Maison de naissance Jacques Genest provide concrete points of reference for local history. The park focuses on protected landscapes, habitats and guided nature exploration. You can plan your stay according to whether you are mainly looking for architecture and historical context or walks through the countryside.

Romanesque architecture and the Église Saint Germain

The Église Saint Germain was built between 1050 and 1120 on the foundations of a 9th-century barn-shaped church. It was constructed in the Romanesque Plantagenet style. Its choir was added in the early 13th century in the Plantagenet style. Finely carved keystones and capitals, as well as several surviving corbel statues, are notable details of the choir. The church therefore offers a way to see two successive building phases: the older church and the choir built later.

The Église Saint Germain is open to visitors daily. Check access arrangements again before your trip. The church can therefore be visited as a separate attraction alongside the nature offerings of the Parc des Garennes and the other historic sites in the town.

Mills and local history

At Les Deux Moulins, the Moulins de la Masse Rutault stand out as two mills from different building periods: one dates from the 17th century, while the second was built in 1838. The dates of the second mill’s closure and restoration are also known: it was decommissioned in 1909 and restored in 2000. This sequence gives the second mill its own history, while their different construction dates also distinguish the two buildings from each other.

Nature in the Parc des Garennes

The Parc des Garennes is partially included in the Val de Loire UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore a mosaic of different habitats on accessible paths through a protected natural landscape. The park thus offers a different focus from the historic buildings, with habitats and nature taking centre stage. Gagée de Bohème, a yellow-flowering lily, grows on the rocky outcrops in the Les Garennes area. Its flowering cannot be guaranteed for any particular visit.

The Maison du Parc is a building dedicated to the Parc des Garennes and welcomes visitors interested in nature. If you plan to visit, check local arrangements in advance. The guided tour “Au Phil du Parc” combines walks with anecdotes about habitats and wildlife. Visits are possible on weekdays throughout the year; check the schedule and arrangements in advance.

For families, the Baludik activity “En’Quête de plantes” offers a nature exploration experience in the Parc des Garennes. Check in advance whether the activity is currently available. There are therefore different ways to explore nature: a guided tour featuring anecdotes about habitats and wildlife, and a family activity focused on discovering plants.

A circular route through landscapes and historic sites

The signposted Parcours Loire et Vieux Hameaux route is described as suitable for walking and cycling. It passes through the Ligurian landscapes and vineyards of Juigné-Sur-Loire. Among the places it allows visitors to discover are the Martigneau vineyards, the Parc Intercommunal des Garennes and the Le Chaillou Blanc manor house. The information about these destinations describes what can be discovered on the route without stating that each place lies directly along its course.

The circular route and “Au Phil du Parc” have different emphases: the guided tour focuses on anecdotes about habitats and wildlife, while the circular route explores the landscapes and named historic sites. When planning, your preferred focus may therefore be decisive: nature stories along the walk or a signposted route with a focus on landscapes and heritage.

Further historical connections

The elevated position of the Maison forte du Plessis de Juigné made it possible to control the valleys of the Loire, Aubance and Louet. The building’s history is therefore also linked to its position above the three valleys. The Maison de naissance Jacques Genest tells a different kind of local history: the two-storey house is located in Juigné-Sur-Loire. Jacques Genest dit Labarre was born there on 17 April 1640. Together with the church and the mills, this biographical connection complements the architectural history with a specific person and an exact date.
