Martigné-Briand: Historic Gardens, Châteaux and Vineyards
Accommodation in Martigné-Briand
Historic gardens, buildings and vineyard landscapes give Martigné-Briand different reasons to visit. When looking for a hotel, you can base your choice on the themes that interest you most: gardens and architectural history, the Coteaux landscape, or a route with historical stops.
Gardens and Architectural History
The Château de Villeneuve is a historic monument dating from the 12th and 15th centuries. Visitors can stroll through the reconstructed historic gardens; an explanatory document is available. The gardens bear the official “Beau jardin des pays de la Loire” label. Monument status and the garden label refer to different things: the Château and its historic gardens, respectively.
The Église Saint-Simplicien was historically associated with the Château de Martigné-Briand and formed part of the estate’s defensive system. The church as a whole was listed as a historic monument by decree of May 12, 2015. The Château de Martigné-Briand is dated to the 16th century, with the year 1503 given. The Château des Noyers, in turn, is dated to the 14th and 17th centuries. These buildings offer different points of reference in time, which can be considered separately during a visit.
Landscape and Routes
The Coteaux de Martigné-Briand lie in somewhat steep terrain in the commune of Terranjou. Its landscape includes a wooded valley floor, cereal fields, dry grasslands, fallow land and numerous vineyards. Plants that are rare in Maine-et-Loire have grown on the exposed limestone rocks and sandy soils. The Coteaux thus bring together varied landscape features and geological sites; the plant life adds another perspective on nature to the views of fields and vineyards.
The 14-kilometre “Sur les pas de Saint Martin” route starts and ends in Martigné-Briand. It is described as taking 3 hours and 30 minutes on foot, one hour by bicycle and two hours on horseback. Along the way, the route passes through hamlets and by châteaux, a fountain, a chapel, washhouses and megaliths as reminders of the past. The Circuit de Maligné offers a different focus: it runs through vineyards and provides 360-degree panoramas. When planning, you can choose between a route with several historical stops and a circuit with vineyard views and panoramic vistas.
Tastings and Visits
Famille Gazeau offers tours and tastings. A private tasting includes charcuterie and cheese from local producers. If you plan to include this activity, check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.
