Brain-sur-l'Authion combines an extensive marsh with walking and cycling trails, historic buildings and public cultural amenities. Numerous walking and cycling trails cross the 800-hectare marsh. The Marais des Prés d'Amont, Saint-Pierre Church and local produce each offer something different: nature watching, architectural history and regional products appeal to different interests.

Trails through marshland and cultural landscapes

The trail through the Marais des Prés d'Amont starts at the car park of the municipal campsite in Brain-sur-l'Authion, Rue du Pont Caroline, 49800 Loire-Authion. It is designed especially for families exploring the Authion marsh. Boardwalks run through reed beds and past educational ponds. Along the way, you can spot amphibians, reed-bed wildlife and notable plant and animal species of the marsh.

The “Entre marais et ardoises” circular route is 15.7 kilometres long and passes through the large cultivated areas that define the Loire-Authion area. The landscapes offer contrasting features: the Marais is characterised by reeds, boardwalks and opportunities to observe the marsh, while the circular route crosses the Loire-Authion landscape shaped by cultivated fields.

Church and historic architecture

Saint-Pierre Church reflects several phases of construction. The main building phases may date from the 12th century; others date from the 16th century and the second quarter of the 19th century. The remains of the Romanesque apse, the bell tower, and the chapels from the 13th and 15th centuries were listed by decree on 4 April 1986. At the former Château de Narcé, the façades and roofs of the outbuildings and the chapel were listed by decree on 17 June 1975.

Brain-sur-l'Authion is in an area included in the charter of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park. The Brain-sur-l'Authion area is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Local produce, seed swapping and the media library

Local produce also comes in a variety of forms. Aux Fraises d’Anjou offers pick-your-own strawberries, cherries and apples in Brain-sur-l'Authion. In Brain-sur-l'Authion, La Ferme de François, run by EARL Touchet Martin, sells organic beef, veal and pork, as well as flour made from wheat, buckwheat, rye and spelt, directly to customers. The activities differ: at Aux Fraises d’Anjou, you pick your own fruit; at La Ferme de François, the focus is on the direct sale of meat and flour.

The Médiathèque des 4 vents is a free public space for culture, meeting others and leisure. Its offerings include books on local heritage, board games, DVDs and CDs. The media library is also home to the Grainothèque, a public seed-swap point. You can leave or take seeds for fruit, vegetables or flowers. For those interested in local history, architectural traces of the past such as Saint-Pierre Church sit alongside books on local heritage; other offerings include games and audiovisual media.
