Saint-Mars-La-Jaille brings together cultural and historical sites, trails and outdoor activities. Highlights include a watermill, the Church of Saint-Médard, a historic park, a museum and two trails with stated lengths. When planning your trip, it is also important to note the different visiting conditions: the park has opening hours, while the museum requires advance reservations.

Cultural History: Mill, Church and Places of Remembrance

The Moulin de la Charlotte is the only watermill in Saint-Mars-La-Jaille. Its origins are said to date back to the 12th century. Its mechanism and millstones are still in place and are considered evidence of pre-industrial milling technology. Its origins and surviving machinery give the building different historical points of reference.

The Église Saint-Médard was rebuilt in 1840 to replace an earlier building dating from 1344. It preserves a large statue of Saint Médard, as well as marble statuettes representing the theological virtues. Thus, a dated reconstruction and specific features of the interior stand side by side.

The Croix Letort commemorates Jacques Letort, who was executed by the Chouans on December 16, 1793. During the European Heritage Days, the local heritage association organizes a guided tour there every year; check that year's program before your trip. A stone statue of an armed knight stands on Avenue Charles-Henri de Cossé-Brissac in Saint-Mars-La-Jaille. On Rue d’Ancenis stands a water tower built in 1961, with an unusual shape and the colors of the agricultural machinery manufacturer. The history of BRAUD also goes back a long way: Alexandre Braud founded the company in 1898 in Saint-Mars-La-Jaille.

Park and Museum: Check Visiting Hours

The Parc du Château de La Ferronnays is an 18th-century park. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1994 and is part of the “Jardins de France” network. The park is open on Sundays and public holidays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Check the hours before your visit, as they may change.

The Musée L’Aventure Braud has three exhibition rooms on the development of grain and grape harvesting over the past century. Visits are possible year-round by prior reservation. Check the current booking and access arrangements in advance. The planning requirements for the park and museum therefore differ: for the park, the stated days and hours apply; for the museum, a reservation is required.

Comparing Two Trails: Length, Scenery and Starting Point

The Circuit de la Fontaine de la Mauricette is 7.5 kilometers long, running along the banks of the Erdre and through the countryside; it starts at the Plan d’eau. The Circuit de la Rotte aux Loups is 7 kilometers long, passes through the forest of Saint-Mars-La-Jaille and starts at Les Sencies. The routes therefore differ by half a kilometer, as well as in their described surroundings and starting points. Check the latest route information before setting out, as conditions and signage may change.

Getting Around and Spending Time Outdoors

The Parcours Permanent d’Orientation is located in the park at the Plan d’eau in Vallons-de-l’Erdre, Saint-Mars-La-Jaille. It offers two formats: an orienteering course, where participants look for and mark checkpoints, and a cultural and historical course with questions about the history of the municipality, its fauna and its flora. You can choose between a checkpoint-based challenge and a course featuring questions about history and nature. Check current availability before your visit.

Near Saint-Mars-La-Jaille, the Plan d’eau des Lavandières has picnic tables and a recreation area with a pétanque court and a children’s playground. These are specific facilities for an outdoor break. Details about the facilities and access may change; check the latest information before your visit.
