Discover culture and leisure in Montoir-de-Bretagne
Accommodation in Montoir-de-Bretagne
If you are planning a stay in Montoir-de-Bretagne, you can choose activities based on what interests you locally: the town’s history, historic plants, boating, or leisure activities. The cultural and historical aspects are particularly prominent. There is also a trip on a chaland, an orienteering course, and areas for water-based activities and relaxation. The activities take different forms: information panels and a walk, a garden, a boat trip, and a self-guided visit each offer something different.
Town history and historic plants
The Musée à ciel ouvert is a walking route offered by the Groupement Animation Tourisme Montoir (GATM) association and the town. Along the way, you discover Montoir-de-Bretagne as it was in the 1900s; 25 information panels explain life, the inhabitants, and the infrastructure at the beginning of the 20th century. This brings everyday life and infrastructure together within the same historical period. If you are interested in how these themes combine to paint a picture of the town’s history, the walk offers a good way to explore them.
The Jardin Médiéval des Caves was created in 2014 to mark the 500th anniversary of Anne de Bretagne’s death and presents cultivated plants of the Middle Ages in an educational way. The garden brings together forgotten species that were once used on the tables of ordinary people and dukes, as well as in decoctions, at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. This historical context connects the plants with their former uses and makes the garden a way to explore the cultural history of food and plant use.
Historical heritage and planning your visit
The stately Domaine de l’Ormois in Montoir belonged to the Vicomté de Donges. Today, the Domaine hosts numerous events; the Groupement Animation Tourisme Montoir also organizes some of them. Its historical associations and its use as an event venue are distinct aspects. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates in advance, as the programme may change.
The Musée de la marine en bois du Brivet opened in Montoir-de-Bretagne in June 2000 and received the « Valeurs Parc naturel régional » label. Individual, self-guided visits are available, and admission is free. Opening arrangements may vary by season, so check them before your visit. The Remontées du Brivet offer a different perspective on the local heritage: on a trip aboard a chaland, you can also discover the local flora and fauna.
Leisure and orienteering
The Parc de l’Aventurier is a 1.5-hectare leisure and recreation area in the town centre. One of its features is a monumental wooden play structure in the shape of a Beluga cargo aircraft. Unlike the historical walks and garden-themed activities, this is a leisure area centred on a clearly identifiable aircraft theme.
The Parcours Permanent d’Orientation is located at the Complexe sportif Bonne Fontaine. Its route involves a map, marked checkpoints, and a punch card. You can complete the course on foot or challenge yourself to finish as quickly as possible. The map and checkpoints guide you, and the punch card is also part of the course.
The Aquaparc is a water and recreation area open to everyone. An inflatable structure is set up in the sports pool from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and is accessible to children and adults. Opening hours may vary, so check the times before your visit. When planning around the different activities, you can distinguish this water-based activity, available at set times, from the course’s map-based orienteering.
