Saint-Herblon: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Saint-Herblon
Saint-Herblon brings together nature, trails and local history in clearly distinct themes: the Marais de Grée is known for its wetlands and birdlife, while hiking trails and an orienteering course offer different ways to explore actively. Other points of interest include a parish church with its own building history, a renovated former windmill and traces of an early castle. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the landscape, outdoor activities or historic buildings.
The Marais de Grée and its birdlife
The Marais de Grée, a wetland that sometimes dries up, lies between Ancenis and Saint-Herblon. It can cover up to 450 hectares. This maximum figure makes clear that its size varies. Its diverse flora and fauna include numerous migratory birds. The Marais offers a tangible connection to nature for travellers who want to focus more on birdlife and the landscape.
The bird observatory offers panoramic views. A footpath leading there starts at the Maison du marais. If birdwatching is your priority, the viewpoint and this starting point give you a clear reference for planning your visit.
Trails through the countryside
The Circuit de la Fontaine Ferrugineuse is a 6.2-kilometre hiking trail through Saint-Herblon. Its landscape is characterised by green paths, rolling terrain and unspoilt nature. Benches along the route offer places to rest. This means you can consider the trail length, landscape and places to take a break separately when choosing a route.
Another circular route leads to the Moulin de la Challoire. It passes through the Vallon de la Saugère, follows a section of the stream and takes you along a picturesque sunken lane by the rocks. This offers a clear distinction when choosing a route: the Circuit de la Fontaine Ferrugineuse is defined by its length and benches, while the valley, stream section and sunken lane shape the landscape along the circular route to the Moulin.
The Fontaine ferrugineuse is an iron-rich mineral spring; its water is not drinkable.
Building history and surviving traces
The parish church of Saint-Herblon was destroyed by fire on 6 August 1899. The architect Bougouin rebuilt it in the following years. The exact date marks the turning point, while the rebuilding represents a later phase in the church’s history.
The Moulin de la Challoire is a renovated former windmill. Châteaufromont is one of the early castles of which only traces remain. These historical landmarks differ considerably: the church is associated with its destruction and subsequent rebuilding, the Moulin with its former use as a mill and its renovation, and Châteaufromont with the surviving traces of a castle.
Finding your way around the town centre
The Parcours Permanent d’Orientation – Vair-sur-Loire (Saint-Herblon) is located in a leisure area in the centre of Saint-Herblon. It offers standard orienteering courses, variations with even- and odd-numbered checkpoints, as well as star and question courses. Here, the focus is on choosing a course format, whereas the hiking trails are shaped by their respective landscapes. Orienteering is therefore a distinct activity alongside nature watching and hiking.
