Situated on the Isac, Guenrouet is connected to the Nantes–Brest Canal: the river is one of eight rivers whose course the canal follows. In the landscape around Guenrouet, the canal also forms a biological corridor. Together, the river and canal give the area a distinct connection to nature and water, while the bridge, lock and churches offer further points of interest for cultural heritage.

Routes along the canal and through the countryside

There is a nature walk of about ten kilometres along the canal, just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. The Sentier du Canal is a separate route: it starts at Quai Saint-Clair in Guenrouet, is twelve kilometres long and takes about three hours on average. At the stated distance, it is a little longer than the walk of around ten kilometres; the average duration is an additional planning guide for the Sentier. Check trail conditions before setting out. The Sentier passes through bocage and rural landscapes, with views of canals, rivers and estuaries along the way.

If being close to the town centre matters to you, the nature walk is one option. The Sentier’s average duration of about three hours gives you a guide for a longer hike. This lets you compare the two routes by their distance from the centre, length and stated duration.

Bridges, locks and churches

The Pont de Melneuf is a granite bridge. It was built after the Nantes–Brest Canal and opened in 1886. The Melneuf Lock is a point of interest on the canal in Guenrouet. The bridge and lock make the canal a subject of interest not only as a landscape, but also through its individual structures.

The history of the Church of St Hermeland and its art go hand in hand. After being partially destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt between 1946 and 1949. It has 27 stained-glass windows by Gabriel Loire, made in the workshops of Chartres. The building’s post-war history and its artistic decoration are two distinct aspects of the church.

Notre Dame de Grâce is linked to a different tradition. The church was known for pilgrimages to the spring at Riavaux, where the Virgin is said to have appeared to children in the 9th century. As well as architecture and art, Guenrouet therefore offers its own connection to religious history.

Water activities and a farm visit

Stand-up paddleboards are available throughout the summer at the Saint-Clair recreation area, where you can explore the surroundings on the water. Pedal boats are also available in summer at the Guenrouet recreation area, likewise offering a way to explore the surroundings from the water. Alongside walks and hikes, these are two seasonal water activities to consider.

Ferme de Bel Air offers guided visits by reservation. Its educational programme also includes activities on the traditional processing of sheep’s wool. If you are planning a visit, check the current reservation arrangements with the farm.
