Besné combines historic religious buildings and cultural events with trails through the Brière landscape. Churches, events, and nature offer different points of interest for planning your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel in Besné, you can plan your stay around a concert, a performance, or a hike.

Churches and Religious History

The Saint-Second Chapel was rebuilt around 1640 on older foundations. A Celtic cross dating from the 15th or 16th century now stands in the Besné cemetery; it was moved there in 1872. The date when the cross was made and the date it was moved are two distinct historical details.

The large windows of Saint-Friard Church are adorned with stained-glass windows depicting the life of Saint Friard. Other religious relics in Besné include two 7th-century sarcophagi in a semi-subterranean crypt. For a long time, they held the bodies of the hermit saints Friard and Second.

The large organ in the gallery of Besné’s parish church was built in 1907–1908 by Nantes organ builder Louis Debierre. Public organ concerts are held there every year; specific dates may vary. Check the concert dates if you’d like to plan your trip around one.

Cultural Events and Venues

Espace A Cappella offers a varied municipal cultural program, with one performance per month. Its retractable bleachers provide 236 seats. Visitors can walk to the venue from the Parc des îles parking lot.

The Folk en Scènes festival takes place in spring and showcases emerging and established artists from the local and international scene in Besné. If you’d like to plan your trip around a performance or festival, check the specific event date in advance. The monthly program offers a different scheduling option from the spring festival.

Hiking and Wetlands

The “La Chalandiere et le Brivet” loop trail is 9.3 km long and rated easy. It starts in Besné, in the Brière Regional Natural Park, and passes through wetlands. Rainfall and changing water levels can affect the trails; take these conditions into account when planning.

The GR3 long-distance hiking trail also starts in Besné, but at the edge of the Brière Regional Natural Park. The starting points described are therefore different: the loop trail starts inside the park, while the GR3 starts at its edge. The Marais de Saint-Second is a protected, natural wetland.

Kayak and Paddleboard Equipment

Canoë Kayak Besné has sea and river kayaks, two- and three-person canoes, and a range of paddleboards, including a large paddleboard. If you’re planning to use specific equipment during your stay, check in advance whether it’s currently available.
