Saint-Viaud: Lake, heritage and the Loire estuary
Accommodation in Saint-Viaud
Saint-Viaud is situated on Mont-Scobrit and overlooks the Loire estuary. Nature, water sports and cultural heritage offer different ways to spend your stay. The municipal lake and two circular trails provide options for activities, while the mill, villa and sundial tell different sides of the area’s history.
Landscape and lake
The lake at Saint-Viaud is a four-hectare natural area and is open year-round. Its modest size and location within the municipality give the water its own distinct place in the landscape. The circular trails also offer different perspectives: one goes around the lake, while the other follows country lanes through the bocage to panoramic views over the Loire estuary. You can choose between a walk by the water and a longer exploration of the municipality.
Two circular trails at different scales
The Tour du lac de Saint-Viaud is 1.5 kilometres long and follows a circular route around the lake. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility and to families with pushchairs or small bicycles. The trail is also approved by the département and is part of the Comité Départemental de la Randonnée Pédestre’s “Balade à Roulettes®” network. This designation adds to the accessibility information and can help you decide whether to include a short walk in your plans.
The Circuit des Hauteurs is considerably longer: this 13.4-kilometre circular route is intended for walking and cycling and offers a way to explore the municipality and its viewpoints. It follows country lanes through the bocage, passing panoramas and viewpoints over the Loire estuary. Compared with the 1.5-kilometre Tour du lac, the Circuit des Hauteurs is a different scale of route, with more emphasis on the landscape. The two trails offer a clear choice between a circuit by the lake and a longer route through the municipality.
Water sports at the municipal lake
At the municipal lake, TSN44 offers kneeboarding, wakeboarding, water skiing and wakeskating. The large cable-ski course is circular and 560 metres long. This gives you several named water sports to choose from, along with a specific feature of the course, if you are interested in the lake not only as part of the landscape but also as a place for activities on the water. Operating arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information from TSN44 before making plans.
The mill, villa and other local history
The Moulin de la Ramée was probably built in 1567 and is listed as a historic monument, including its mechanism. It retains its internal mechanisms and a single pair of millstones. Its probable construction date gives the mill a distinct historical context, and the listing explicitly includes the mechanism. The mill can therefore be understood not only in terms of its age but also through its preserved milling equipment.
The Villa du Plessis-Grimaud was built in 1846 for the widow Carroux, on the hill where an earlier manor house once stood overlooking the Loire. An order dated 16 April 1997 lists it as a historic monument. The Fuye du Château du Plessis-Mareil is listed as a historic monument under a separate order dated 1 March 1978. The dates have different meanings: 1846 is the year the villa was built, while 1997 and 1978 are the dates of the respective listing orders. In contrast, the mill’s year of construction is explicitly described as probable.
Another notable landmark is the monumental sundial in the Vallon de la Pivre at the foot of the church. Together with the listings for the mill, the villa and the Fuye, it shows that Saint-Viaud’s heritage is not limited to a single building. When planning your visit, you can therefore include the historic sites as separate stops alongside the lake, trails and water sports.
