Belligné combines a predominantly agricultural landscape with historic buildings and a designated spot for outdoor recreation. Churches, a chapel, a château and a former mill tell different chapters of local history; bocage, wetlands and the Auxence shape the landscape. At Étang des Garennes, you can go for walks and fish. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Belligné, these themes can help you decide whether to focus on local history or the landscape.

Churches, Chapels and Historic Buildings

The present-day Église Saint-Martin was built between 1904 and 1907 and consecrated in 1907. The church contains eight 19th-century frescoes by the painter Gabriel Loire depicting Saint Martin, the parish’s patron saint. The construction period and the frescoes offer different points of interest: the creation of the present-day church building and the depiction of the parish’s patron saint.

The Chapelle de La Vesquerie dates back to an earlier period. It has existed since before 1700 and was restored in 2000 by Belligné Mémoire. Chronologically, the chapel is clearly distinct from the present-day Église Saint-Martin: one dates back to before 1700, while the other was built between 1904 and 1907.

The Château de La Gallerie was the residence of Sieur Des Mesliers, mayor of Belligné during the French Revolution; the building was burned down in 1793. Lucien Mangini bought the Château de La Gallerie in 1888 and extensively remodelled it to his own plans.

The Moulin de La Gallerie tells another chapter of local history. In the 19th century, it was one of six mills operating in Belligné. The mill ceased operating in the 1920s with the advent of electricity and engines. The mill adds a perspective on the use of energy and technology at the time to the architectural history of the church and château.

Bocage, Wetlands and the Auxence

Belligné’s landscape is predominantly agricultural. A well-preserved bocage network of hedgerows and clusters of trees is part of the landscape; numerous wetlands also run through the area. To the north lie wooded outskirts and the Bois de Rougé. The ridges run from east to west, and several high points offer open views across the commune’s landscape. Hedgerows and clusters of trees, wetlands, woodland and open views thus stand alongside one another as distinct aspects of the landscape.

The Auxence can also be located precisely: it rises at the hamlet of Beau Soleil in Belligné, crosses the area and the village centre, and flows for almost 13 kilometres. It then joins the Romme, a tributary of the Loire. The river’s course therefore extends from its source within Belligné to its confluence with a tributary of the Loire.

Recreation at Étang des Garennes

At Étang des Garennes, you can go for walks and fish. There is a children’s playground and picnic tables; visitors also have access to toilets and a covered shelter. The facilities on site therefore include both activities at the pond and practical amenities for visitors.

This gives you several interests to consider when planning your trip: the historic buildings and the mill offer different ways to explore local history, while the bocage, river and wetlands describe the character of the landscape. Étang des Garennes adds walking and fishing to these options. You can take into account which of these you want to shape your stay when choosing a hotel in Belligné.
