On a trip to La Poterie-Cap-D'antifer, you can explore nature, architectural history and events from the Second World War. Specific points of interest include the Valleuses de Bruneval and d'Antifer, the Église Saint-Martin, the Phare d'Antifer and Operation Biting. If you are looking for a hotel, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Nature and trails

The commune's rich natural heritage includes the Valleuses de Bruneval and d'Antifer, as well as ZNIEFF sites of types I and II, Espaces Naturels Sensibles and Natura 2000 sites. La Poterie-Cap-D'antifer is also one of the 13 communes in the Grand Site Falaises d'Étretat-Côte d'Albâtre.

The hiking trail through the Valleuse d'Antifer passes through Étretat, Le Tilleul and La Poterie-Cap-D'antifer. Part of it runs through the Valleuse d'Antifer, which is designated as a sensitive natural area and belongs to the Conservatoire du littoral.

The Valleuse du Fouquet can only be reached on foot. A staircase leads down to the rocky foreshore, which is used by sea-angling enthusiasts. Plan your visit with this footpath and staircase access in mind. For trip planning, the distinction is clear: d'Antifer is described as a hiking trail through three communes; at Fouquet, a staircase leads to the foreshore.

Buildings and local history

The Église Saint-Martin combines two periods of construction: it was built in the 12th century and largely rebuilt in the 17th century. A cornice with grotesque heads survives on the north side of the nave. A cornice is a horizontally projecting architectural feature; the grotesque heads are a detail on this feature. In the church, the historic feature is a cornice, while the lighthouse's shape and dimensions define the entire tower.

The Phare d'Antifer is located within the commune of La Poterie-Cap-D'antifer. The octagonal tower is 37.90 metres high, has curved sides and 170 steps. Octagonal means eight-sided; the height describes an external dimension, while the number of steps provides another structural detail. The current lighthouse was built from 1949, commissioned on 21 November 1955 and is automated.

Operation Biting, also known as the Raid de Bruneval, took place on the cliffs of La Poterie-Cap-D'antifer on the night of 27–28 February 1942. Its aim was to capture important components of a German radar while giving the impression that the radar had been destroyed. The chronology distinguishes these historical points of reference: the church's construction in the 12th century was followed by the 1942 operation and construction of the current lighthouse from 1949.

Choose the focus of your trip

If you are looking for a hotel, you can start with your interests: hiking trails and the footpath to the foreshore on one hand, and the church, lighthouse and local history on the other. This lets you plan your stay around whether you would like to focus on nature trails or on buildings and historical events.
