In Grainville-la-Teinturière, traces of local history meet a landscape of meadows, woods and ponds. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: historic buildings, the Musée Jean de Béthencourt, the natural area of the Basses Eaux or the GR211 long-distance trail. The places and themes below offer concrete starting points for exploring the commune according to your interests.

Buildings and local history

The Colombier de la Motte Féodale is a central landmark. It stands on the former feudal mound, on the site of the former Château de Grainville, which was destroyed around 1580. The dovecote is estimated to date from the late 17th to early 18th century. Its base is made of sandstone, its walls of brick and alternating flint, and its roof has eight sides. Its location, estimated construction period and materials offer different ways to explore the building’s history.

The parish church of Notre-Dame also tells the story of several building phases. The earlier church’s surviving features include the base of the bell tower, built by Simon Vitecoq in the first half of the 16th century, and the nave’s west wall. Reconstruction began after 1700. The south and north doors bear the date 1714, while the upper parts of the bell tower were renovated in the 19th century. Patronage belonged to Saint-Wandrille Abbey in the Seine-Maritime department. The surviving older parts, reconstruction and later renovation can thus be distinguished chronologically.

Local history is also reflected in the name: the byname “la Teinturière” derives from “Tinctuaria,” mentioned in 1292. The name is probably connected with dyeing works along the banks of the Durdent. This remains a probable explanation, not a certainty.

The Musée Jean de Béthencourt

The Musée Jean de Béthencourt tells the story of the Norman nobleman Jean de Béthencourt, who set out in 1402 to conquer the Canary Islands at his own expense. The museum also covers the Canary Islands today and the special ties Grainville-la-Teinturière maintains with them. Its scope therefore extends from the historical connection with Jean de Béthencourt to the islands in the present day.

Caves, landscapes and trails

The Grotte du Trou de Marie Marot is also known as the “Trou à Pierrot.” It consists of three caves cut into the cliff below the Bois de la Roquette. The entrance is on the Route du Colombier; access conditions may vary. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether access is possible at the time of your visit.

The Basses Eaux cover 45 hectares in the Durdent valley between Le Hanouard and Grainville-la-Teinturière. Meadows, woods and ponds make up the landscape of this area. Orchids, bats and invertebrates can be found along the circular trail; the route follows ponds where fish, insects and herons occur. Exploring the Basses Eaux can therefore bring both the variety of habitats and the plants and animals mentioned here into focus.

South of Grainville lies the Catelet, a slope with a plateau. From the church, a stone path climbs up via roads; from the plateau, you can take in a 180-degree view of the commune. This offers a different perspective from the circular trail in the valley: here the view over the village is the main attraction, while there it is the landscape of meadows, woods and ponds.

The GR211 long-distance trail also passes through Grainville-la-Teinturière, on the section between Caudebec-en-Caux and Veulettes-sur-Mer. It adds a walking route that extends beyond the commune to the local attractions. Together with the buildings, museum and natural areas, it offers a choice of local history, nature and walking—depending on what interests you most on your trip.
