Darnétal offers several clearly distinct highlights to consider when planning your trip: historic churches, sites connected with industrial history and nature in the Bois du Roule. There are also routes of varying lengths, with practical details. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on churches and industrial heritage, a longer route or a path along two waterways.

Churches and historic traces

The Église paroissiale Saint-Pierre de Carville was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Its choir features 16th-century stained-glass windows and paintings in imitation marble. The term refers to a painted design that imitates marble; in the choir, stained glass and wall paintings therefore appear side by side as distinct decorative elements. The church, including its detached bell tower, was classified as a historic monument by decree on 22 April 2015.

Different periods meet at the Église Saint-Ouen de Longpaon. A chapel at the site, intended to house the remains of Saint Ouen, is documented from the 10th century. The church itself was built in the late 15th century, extended in the mid-16th century and partially destroyed by fire in 1562. It has been listed as a historic monument since 26 June 1992. The chapel and the later church building can therefore be clearly distinguished chronologically.

Mills, industrial history and theatre

The Moulin de la Croix Rouge, also known as the Moulin Lecouteux, was a flour mill and now houses artists’ studios. At the Moulin Saint-Paul, the remains of a workshop, a shortened chimney and a hydraulic system have been preserved. These traces highlight different aspects: the studios’ present-day use at one site, and preserved parts of a former facility at the other, shape the way visitors see the area’s industrial history.

The Usine Fromage is a 19th-century industrial heritage building and now houses the École d’Architecture de Normandie. The Théâtre de l’Écho du Robec is also located in a former industrial building. Expotec complements these themes as a centre for social history. Its mission is to preserve the memory of work and technology in Normandy.

The Théâtre de l’Écho du Robec in Darnétal is a family theatre with a commitment to historical authenticity. Every year, it stages a play by Molière in costume and adheres to the author’s text. The theatre also offers musical entertainment for all, including performances by Ensemble Miroirs and Lady Smith. As productions and artists may change, check the dates in advance if you want to see a particular performance.

Forest and nature in the Bois du Roule

The Maison des Forêts in Darnétal is located in the Bois du Roule, on a hill above the valleys of the Robec and Aubette. Various tree species grow in the forest, including oaks, birches, maples and wild cherry trees. There are also notable trees, roe deer and numerous bird species. This natural setting offers very different things to observe from the churches and preserved traces of industrial history: alongside the variety of trees, visitors can also look out for the animals that live there.

Routes and practical information

The Le tour de Darnétal route is 14 kilometres long, takes three hours and 30 minutes, and is rated difficult. These details can help you factor the estimated time and stated difficulty into your plans.

The Route des Moulins is 5.4 kilometres long and runs between Rouen Town Hall and Darnétal Town Hall. It follows the two waterways, the Robec and the Aubette. At the end, you reach the “Mairie de Darnétal” bus stop and can take the TEOR back to Rouen city centre. Check the service locally before travelling. The routes therefore differ in more than just length: Le tour de Darnétal also has a stated duration and difficulty rating, while the Route des Moulins gives a specific return transport connection.

A visit to the Cidrerie Ponpon is an opportunity to discover a range of Norman products, such as Pommeau, Calvados, jellies and terrines. Check the visitor arrangements before you arrive.
