Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière combines a named hiking trail with a forest-dominated landscape. There are different points of interest to choose from: the 12.0 km “Au fil de l'Eaulne” trail, with views of the Eaulne Valley, and the Forêt d'Eu on the outskirts of the village. There is also a church located in the village and the natural-area designation of the Basse forêt d'Eu. This lets you explore the area according to your interests—with a specific walk, scenic views or a local landmark in mind.

Hiking the “Au fil de l'Eaulne” trail

The “Au fil de l'Eaulne” hiking trail is in Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière, is 12.0 km long and offers remarkable views of the Eaulne Valley. The distance and valley views give you two specific criteria to consider: the number of kilometres indicates the length of the walk, while the views add to its scenic appeal. If you would like to plan a particular hike during your stay, you can include this trail as a separate activity.

The route is marked with green blazes and green signposts. This waymarking adds a visible feature of the route to the information about its length and views. When comparing hiking routes, you can therefore consider both the specific distance and the described views of the valley. The name “Au fil de l'Eaulne” and the views also make the connection to the valley clear in the name of the hike.

Forest landscapes and natural areas

The Forêt d'Eu lies on the outskirts of Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière and offers visitors panoramic views of forest ponds, woodland edges, clearings and former wet meadows. The landscape is therefore not limited to dense forest: open spaces and transitions along the woodland edge are also among the features described. If you are interested in the surrounding area, you can experience these elements as different aspects of a forest landscape.

The Basse forêt d'Eu is another distinct feature of this natural setting. In the natural inventory dated June 11, 2024, Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière is listed as one of the municipalities within the ZNIEFF Basse forêt d'Eu. This ZNIEFF covers the entire forest massif of the Basse forêt d'Eu as well as a few hectares of meadows along its northern edges. The age of some of the trees is also remarkable: the Basse forêt d'Eu is home to trees that are more than 200 years old.

Part of the Basse forêt d'Eu is included in the Natura 2000 site FR2300136 “La forêt d'Eu et les pelouses adjacentes”. The name refers to the Forêt d'Eu as well as adjacent grasslands; the designation applies to part of the Basse forêt d'Eu. Together with the ZNIEFF designation, this provides a more detailed picture of the natural area: the forest massif, the meadows along its northern edges and the part included in the Natura 2000 site can each be identified by their own designation.

A local landmark

The Eglise Sainte-Beuve is located on Route de l'Eaulne in Sainte-Beuve-en-Rivière. This gives you a specific local landmark in addition to the hiking trail and landscape. You can consider the church as a destination in its own right while the trail focuses on a longer walk and the Forêt d'Eu on the surrounding forest landscape. These different points of interest can help you tailor your stay according to whether you primarily want to hike, enjoy scenic views or explore the village through its church.
