Valcanville: Church, Commanderie and Walking Route
Accommodation in Valcanville
Valcanville brings together several historical landmarks and a clearly defined walking option. The Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Firmin preserves structural elements from different centuries; the Commanderie is one of the town’s historic remains. The Le domaine de Walkan walking route also offers views across the Val de Saire landscape. Valcanville therefore offers both a cultural and historical perspective and a route to explore on foot.
Church and architectural history
The history of the Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Firmin spans several building phases. The imposing bell tower and its stone saddleback roof, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, are all that remain of the first church. In 1827, the church was completely demolished apart from the bell tower, then rebuilt on a larger scale: it is 10 metres wide and 55 metres long. The preserved tower and the rebuilding thus mark different stages in the church’s history. During restoration work, 15th-century frescoes were uncovered and restored in an adjoining chapel. The altar of Saint Firmin is another historical detail: it was created around 1852 or 1855 and is attributed to Etienne-Jean-Philippe Aubin of Valcanville. A local devotional tradition links the church with invoking Saint Firmin against epilepsy, nervous disorders and insomnia.
Exploring Le domaine de Walkan on foot
Le domaine de Walkan is an easy circular walking route in Valcanville. It is 7.1 kilometres long, and the circuit is estimated to take around two hours. The footpaths offer idyllic views across the Val de Saire landscape. The route also passes the Commanderie, one of the town’s historic remains. There is a car park near the starting point. As trail conditions and parking availability may change, check both before your walk.
Commanderie and manor house
The Commanderie de Valcanville was founded in the 12th century and belonged in succession to the Templars, the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and the Order of Malta. As part of the 2026 heritage programme, a guided tour of the privately owned Commanderie was offered, with information about its history and buildings dating from the 12th to the 18th century. Check the dates and conditions of the specific offer before making plans.
The Manoir du Marais is a privately owned manor house dating from the 16th century, modified in different periods. In terms of chronology, the Commanderie was founded earlier, while the manor house represents a later historical landmark. Together, the two sites offer different points of reference for placing Valcanville’s architectural and local history in context.
The historic horse market
The town’s history also includes the horse market at Clos Saint-Firmin. A horse market was held near the church on Saint Firmin’s Day, 25 September. In 1949, it still drew as many as 241 horses and 61 cattle. These figures give an idea of the market’s scale at the time.
The attractions offer different points of interest for trip planning: Le domaine de Walkan has a specific route length and approximate duration, while the church, Commanderie and manor house are chiefly notable for their building dates and history. This can help you decide whether a walk or cultural history will be the focus of your trip.
