For a stay in Sainte-Pience, cultural history and outdoor activities go hand in hand. Château du Parc is central to the village’s history, while the bocage countryside, with its hedgerows, valleys, walking trails, and woods, invites you to explore on foot. Fishing is also possible. You can assess the destination based on whether you are more interested in historic sites or spending time in the countryside.

Château du Parc and historic sites

The first Château du Parc dates back to Jean de Bayeux’s tenure as Bishop of Avranches from 1061 to 1068. The château served as the residence of the Bishops of Avranches from 1061 until the French Revolution. A second Château du Parc was built in 1769. This sequence connects the history of an early episcopal residence with a later building from the 18th century.

The ruins of the Vieux Logis stand near the pond. The original Château du Parc was reflected in this pond. The ruins, the pond, and the château’s history thus offer distinct connections to the former estate without being conflated as a single building.

After Château du Parc, the Manoir de La Porte is considered Sainte-Pience’s most important manor house. The chapel of Saint-Georges stood within the walled grounds of the manor and was built in 1662 by Georges Hullin, Sieur de la Porte. The chapel has not survived. According to Guillaume Servain, it had also ceased to be a place of worship. Both the manor house and the history of the chapel that no longer exists are therefore among the village’s historic features.

Church, statue, and calvary cross

The nave and choir of Sainte-Pience’s church were rebuilt in 1733. At the entrance to the cemetery stands a listed limestone statue of Saint Catherine. Dating from around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, it was added to the heritage register in 1973. The two historic features therefore differ both in their association with the church and cemetery and in their dates.

Another historic detail is the calvary cross at the crossroads of La Rimberdière and L’Airie. Its inscription dates from 1659. The four corners of its base are decorated with shell-shaped ornaments, and its sides feature three different motifs. These details make the cross a distinct landmark in the village’s history. The Fontaine Saint Armel is located in the parking lot by Sainte-Pience’s church.

Bocage countryside, walks, and fishing

Sainte-Pience’s bocage countryside is characterized by hedgerows and valleys. Together with the walking trails and numerous woods, this landscape invites you to explore on foot. Alongside the historic buildings, it offers an outdoor experience that can directly shape the character of a stay. Fishing is another activity available in Sainte-Pience.

The Bois du Parc once covered more than a third of the commune of Sainte-Pience. If you would rather focus on local history than on walks or fishing, Château du Parc, the manor house, the church, and the other historic features offer a range of themes to shape your travel interests around.
