In Besneville, the landscape around Mont de Besneville and its trails take centre stage alongside historic buildings. The themes range from a mosaic-like natural setting, marked hiking trails and a gravel loop to the Église Saint-Florent and the Chapelle de la Géranderie.

Landscape and Views at Mont de Besneville

Mont de Besneville is a natural site with heathland, gorse and grassland. In this preserved setting, birds, plants typical of acidic soils, butterflies and insects find suitable habitats. Those interested in the landscape will therefore find not only open areas here, but also a variety of plant and animal groups that benefit from this environment.

The “Le Mont de Besneville” loop follows small roads up to the Mont and offers 360-degree views of the Cotentin bocage landscape and the Channel Islands. From the summit, the panorama also extends over the beaches of the Cotentin; on a clear day, the Channel Islands can be seen on the horizon. The viewpoints described are therefore different: the loop offers a sweeping all-round view, while the view from the summit also takes in the beaches.

Hiking: Trails and Climbs

The marked trails on the Mont are accessible to hikers of all experience levels. The “Le Mont de Besneville” loop is a green walking trail considered accessible to everyone. Most of the route has moderate climbs. The exception is the ascent to the Mont, which reaches just over 100 metres in elevation. This distinction is useful when considering the route profile: the loop’s general character and the single ascent should not be confused.

The summit itself is also easy to reach on foot. If choosing a hike for its viewpoints, you can take into account the views of the Cotentin bocage landscape and beaches; on a clear day, the Channel Islands can also be seen on the horizon. The loop’s panoramic views and the panorama from the summit complement the picture of the landscape, while the climbs and accessibility are not described as being the same throughout the route.

Gravel Loop and Route Markings

For gravel riders, the “Le Mont de Besneville” loop is signposted with mountain-biking markers, a black gravel sticker and route number 41. These details help identify the route by its markings. For hikers, by contrast, the focus is on the route profile described above, with mostly moderate climbs and a separate ascent to the Mont.

The Mont is also home to three former mills that are part of the area’s history. The first was converted into a chapel after the Second World War. The second former mill has an information board; check its condition on site.

Church and Chapel History

The Église Saint-Florent in Besneville has a distinctive nave with two rows of very slender columns. Plenty of light enters the central nave through the openings in the side aisles. Since 6 September 1993, the church has been listed as a historic monument. Its architecture and protected status offer two different ways to appreciate the building: its spatial design and its historical significance.

The Chapelle de la Géranderie was built in 1744 and restored about 20 years ago. Jeanne Barbe Collas du Genestel (1684–1761), Dame of Annoville, founded the chapel. She donated 4,000 livres for its construction on her land and also endowed the chapel with an annual rent of 100 livres. The chapel can be visited as part of the European Heritage Days. If you are planning a visit, check the current dates of the event.
