Pontorson can be explored from several different perspectives: trails along the Couesnon, the Marais du Couesnon and several buildings offer distinct points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Pontorson, you can start by considering whether outdoor activities, scenery or architectural history are especially important to your stay. This makes it possible to choose a destination based on the themes that suit your travel plans.

Trails and Activities along the Couesnon

The Voie verte between Pontorson and Le Mont-Saint-Michel runs along the right bank of the Couesnon. It allows horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians to use it safely. A footbridge built at Moidrey connects it to the Breton Voie verte towards Cancale. As trail conditions can change, check the latest notices before setting out.

The Base de loisirs de Pontorson offers self-service kayak rentals for one, two, three or four people. Bicycles, mountain bikes, touring bikes and electric bikes are also available for self-service rental. Check in advance whether the respective rental options are available on the day of your visit. The banks of the Couesnon are equipped with picnic tables, play areas, boules courts and toilets. As facilities can change, it is also advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

Nature along the Couesnon

The Marais du Couesnon consists of floodable meadows in the Couesnon valley and is of very high importance for fauna. It is designated as a continental ZNIEFF type 1, includes the commune of Pontorson and covers 424.89 hectares. For travel plans that take natural landscapes into account, the marsh offers a different focus from the Voie verte and its uses: here, the meadows and fauna take centre stage, while the Voie verte focuses on the route and its user groups.

Architectural History and Cultural Heritage

The Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix combines the pure Romanesque style, the transitional Romanesque style and Gothic styles from the 13th and 15th centuries. The Maison Guischard de la Ménardière, also known as the Maison romane, has a well-preserved façade divided by arcades; most of the main part of the building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The two buildings offer different architectural highlights: the church features several styles, while the Maison stands out for its façade design and the dating of its main section.

The Protestant temple Le Prêche in Pontorson is the only Protestant building in the Manche département dating from before the Edict of Nantes of 1598. Its distinction combines a clear historical reference with a designation at the level of the entire département. The Moulin de Moidrey was built in 1806 and restored in 2003. The two dates distinguish the building’s construction from its later restoration.
