In Muneville-sur-Mer, circular walks through the bocage hedgerow countryside connect with themes from the village’s history. For planning your trip, two circular routes can be distinguished by length and starting point; the Église Saint-Pierre and other historic sites add to the picture of the commune.

Comparing the circular walks

Les quatre chemins is an easy, 3.8-kilometre circular walk starting from Muneville-sur-Mer. The walk takes about one hour. The route follows paths and minor roads with little traffic. In winter, the paths can be very wet.

Another circular walk is five kilometres long, starts and ends in the village centre, and is marked in green. Check the markings on site before relying on them. By comparison, Les quatre chemins is the shorter loop and gives an approximate walking time as a guide. For the longer loop, the start and end point in the centre, along with the green markings, help with navigation.

Bocage and landscape

Numerous sunken lanes in the village centre and its surroundings invite you to stroll through the surrounding bocage hedgerow countryside. Bocage refers to a cultivated landscape divided by hedgerows, giving the rural character of the surrounding area a tangible form. The agricultural landscape is diverse, including dairy farming, cattle rearing, poultry, cereals, organic vegetables and ornamental plants. Livestock farming and a variety of plant-based produce can thus be found side by side.

On a clear day, the view from Muneville-sur-Mer extends as far as the Chausey Islands. The distant view adds another landscape perspective to walks through the hedgerow countryside; clear visibility is essential.

The church and local history

The Église Saint-Pierre houses a 14th-century statue of the Virgin Mary and Child. During the French Revolution, parishioners buried the statue to protect it from damage; it is listed as a historic monument. The church also displays a suspended model of an old sailing ship as a maritime ex-voto. An ex-voto is a religious votive offering; the model’s maritime character adds a connection to seafaring to the church’s sacred history.

The local architectural history extends beyond the church. The Ferme de la Vesquerie is a former seigneurial manor dating from the 15th century. From 1839 to 1851, Le Manoir housed a small seminary. These two historic references mark different periods: the history of the manor in the 15th century and Le Manoir’s later use as a seminary.

The memory of war is also part of local history. The churchyard contains three Commonwealth war graves from the 1939–1945 war. They lie eleven metres northwest of the church’s northwest corner.
