Montmartin-Sur-Mer can be viewed from several perspectives when planning a trip: coastal hiking, beach walks, cultural history and an annual festival. If you are looking for a hotel, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The GR223, Plage de Montmartin-sur-Mer, historic buildings and the festival each offer their own highlights.

Paths, Beach and Activities

The GR223 is a 446-kilometre coastal hiking trail, and Montmartin-Sur-Mer is one stage along the route. This places the town within the context of a longer coastal hike. A local walking route is also worth considering when planning your visit: the former railway line between Montmartin and Regnéville now serves as a walking path. The terminus can still be seen there. This way, a walk also takes in a visible remnant of the former railway line. Trail conditions can change; check them locally before setting out for a walk.

Plage de Montmartin-sur-Mer is a natural beach. Walks are permitted there year-round, and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Check this local requirement again before your visit.

Horizon Vertical offers discovery sessions and introductory courses for ages eight and up. The programme and availability may change. If this offer is relevant to your trip, check in advance which activities are available on your travel dates.

History and Buildings

Église de Montmartin was rebuilt from 1840 onwards on the ruins of an older building dating from the 11th century. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent de Paul. Today, only the lower part of the tower remains from the former church. The 19th-century rebuilding thus connects with an older building history, while the remaining part of the tower recalls the former church.

The Fours des Gravelets are another trace of the past. Built in the 19th century, they have been protected as a historic monument under an order dated 5 March 1996. They have not been used since 1914.

The Carrières de Montmartin site can be reached via a small path. Stone from the quarries of Montmartin was used, among other things, for the Pont Alexandre III in Paris. The history of the stone extracted there thus extends beyond the town.

Festival and Travel Dates

“Chauffer dans la noirceur” takes place every year in Montmartin-Sur-Mer, in Normandy by the sea. The programme includes artistic performances, activities and workshops for children, as well as opportunities to discover nature and music. These varied offerings give the festival its own character alongside hiking trails, beach walks and historic sites. Individual activities may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for the edition relevant to you.
