Hudimesnil: Church, Chapel and Trails
Accommodation in Hudimesnil
Hudimesnil combines architectural history with trails through Norman pastureland, wooded areas and a pond that also serves as a starting point for a hike. You can therefore choose what interests you most during your stay: cultural and historical sites, walks and local producers’ offerings each have their own focus. Notable buildings include the parish church of Notre-Dame, Chapelle Sainte-Suzanne and Manoir d’Ontot.
Church and historic buildings
The parish church of Notre-Dame in Hudimesnil has a nave that was completely rebuilt in 1837. The choir and lower part of the tower may date from the second half of the Middle Ages. The church therefore brings together a precisely dated new construction and architectural elements that may be older. The church also houses a statue of Saint Marcouf. It is dated to the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and has been a protected object since 23 November 1978. The dates thus refer to different aspects: 1837 applies to the nave, the turn of the centuries to the statue, and 1978 to its protected status.
Chapelle Sainte-Suzanne dates from the 16th century. The hike to it starts at the pond in Hudimesnil and leads through Norman pastureland; the chapel is a designated stop along the route. The route therefore links the start at the pond with the pastureland and a religious building. In the 1970s, Abbé Lelégard acquired the chapel. Its construction date and this later historical milestone offer two different points of interest for visitors interested in cultural history.
Manoir d’Ontot offers a different architectural focus. It consists mainly of buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, which surround a large courtyard originally used in common. A monumental portal from the 17th century has also been preserved. The large gate was designed for carts, and a smaller pedestrian gate stands beside it. The remains of a rectangular dovecote are also located by the portal. The courtyard, portal and outbuildings thus give a concrete picture of the estate’s different architectural elements, without requiring all parts to be assigned to the same period.
Walks and routes
Hudimesnil has a 3.5-hectare pond and wooded areas that are well suited to walks. The hike to Chapelle Sainte-Suzanne starts at the pond and continues through Norman pastureland. Another route is La Trouée Verte, which passes Moulin du Pont along the banks of the Boscq. For orientation, the two routes can be distinguished by their stated features: the chapel hike is defined by the pond, pastureland and chapel, while La Trouée Verte features the mill and riverbank.
Direct sales and farm markets
Le Pré Vert at Bois Landelle, 50510 Hudimesnil, offers farm-direct sales on Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. As sales arrangements may change, check the latest information in advance. Local producers also join together to offer farm markets. Their dates may change too, so checking the latest market information before your visit will help with planning. This allows you to distinguish a named farm-direct sales outlet from the jointly organised markets.
