Discover Giéville: Horse Riding, Hiking and Local History
Accommodation in Giéville
Giéville offers several different ways to plan your trip: the moderately difficult 31-kilometre Circuit de Giéville, the Club Hippique de l’If, an equestrian centre and pony club in the Bocage, and local wartime and church history. If you are looking for a hotel, you could first consider whether outdoor activities, horse riding or historical interests will be the main focus of your stay. These interests offer different ways to get to know Giéville and tailor your stay to your own travel plans.
Hiking and Horse Riding
The Circuit de Giéville is a moderately difficult hiking route, 31 kilometres long. Its difficulty and distance provide two different points of reference: “moderate” describes the challenge of the route, while the kilometre figure indicates its length. To plan your time, you can take your own pace into account. This keeps difficulty and distance as separate factors when you fit the hike into your trip.
The Club Hippique de l’If is an equestrian centre and pony club in the Bocage. Its horse-riding activities range from baby pony rides to options for experienced riders, catering to different experience levels. As activities may change over time, check the specific offerings before your trip.
When choosing a focus for your activities, the two options differ in the features that guide your planning: for the Circuit, the main considerations are difficulty and distance; for the club, it is the range of horse-riding activities.
Local History and Church Art
On 26 July 1944, German anti-aircraft fire shot down the P-47 aircraft flown by US Air Force pilot John Drummond. The aircraft crashed on a property in the municipality of Giéville, at a place called La Beaudrie. After landing in Normandy, Drummond was captured by German soldiers near the crash site. The date, the pilot and the precise location give this historical event a concrete local connection. The sequence from the shootdown to the crash and then the capture links the incident to Drummond’s subsequent fate.
Another cultural and historical highlight is the Church of Saint-Martin. It houses a 15th-century stone statue of the Virgin and Child and has figurative stained-glass windows by Charles Lorin, some of which are dated 1917. The statue and windows represent different forms of religious art: a stone figure on the one hand and figurative glasswork on the other. The statue can be identified by its subject, material and century, while the windows also have an artist’s name and a date of 1917. This offers a concrete comparison between sculpture and stained-glass windows, as well as their respective dates.
Local Produce
At La Baudrie in Giéville, Aglaë Cosmétique produces organic goat’s milk and organic honey. This adds local production and a named business to the activities and history on offer. When planning your trip around your interests, you can consider local product-making as a focus alongside hiking, horse riding and art history.
