Saint-Étienne Church: dates and building history
Saint-Étienne Church can also be understood through several clearly dated events. It was consecrated in 1283; in 1286, the parish was transferred to Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. The church building collapsed in 1816 and was completely rebuilt. These dates relate to different stages: the consecration and transfer took place in the 13th century, while the collapse and rebuilding took place in the 19th century. The church also houses a painted plaster statue of Saint Joseph from the second half of the 19th century. It was listed as a protected object on 29 July 1991.
Bay scenery and the Route des Roses
Bacilly is part of the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel Natura 2000 site. The bay features estuaries, mudflats, salt marshes, dune systems, cliffs, rocky islets and peripheral marshland. This offers a different travel focus from the church’s history: here, coastal landscapes shape the way you experience the region. Château de Chantore in Bacilly is a stop on the Route des Roses, which runs along the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. A cultural site and a route along the bay thus come together as two regional points of interest.
For 2026, the “Passage en baie avec Hugo Poulet” offering is associated with a 15 km crossing of the bay. This differs from the château’s connection to the route: the crossing is the main focus of the Passage, while Chantore is a stop on the Route des Roses.
