Discover La Glacerie
Accommodation in La Glacerie
To decide whether La Glacerie is right for your stay, its cultural history and hiking trails offer two different points of reference. The history of mirror-glass production and regional collections offer a different focus from walks in the Echovallée and Vallée du Trottebec. This can help you weigh up whether you are mainly looking for the cultural heritage of the Cotentin or walks in natural surroundings.
The history of mirror glass and cultural heritage
From 1667 to 1830, the Manufacture royale des glaces produced mirror glass in La Glacerie, including the mirrors for the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. This long history of production gives mirror-making a prominent place among the town’s historical themes.
The Musée Connaissance du Cotentin is housed in a 19th-century farmhouse in Hameau Luce; the farm overlooks the village of la Verrerie. The museum preserves collections relating to the former Manufacture Royale des Glaces à Miroirs, as well as an extensive collection of Norman headdresses and traditional costumes. It also displays everyday objects from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The result is a presentation of the history of the manufactory, clothing and everyday life across different periods.
La Glacerie’s notable cultural heritage sites include the Eglise Notre-Dame de la Délivrande, the Manoir de la Fieffe and the Château des Roches. The château in the Domaine du château de Tourlaville was built in 1562 and is representative of Cotentin Renaissance architecture. The estate lies partly within La Glacerie.
Hiking trails and nature
The Echovallée is a 40-hectare area within La Glacerie, stretching from rue de Bel Air to the vallée de Quincampoix. The Echovallée trail is a moderately difficult 4.3-kilometre hike and takes about one hour and 30 minutes. The Echovallée is suitable for family walks in natural, unspoilt surroundings.
You can reach the Echovallée on Cap-Cotentin bus routes D and S14, getting off at the “La glacerie Mairie” stop. The Vallée du Trottebec trail can be reached on Cap-Cotentin bus route 7, getting off at the “Cables” stop. Check routes and stops before travelling, as both may change.
The Vallée du Trottebec trail is a rural woodland walk along forest tracks and hunting paths. It starts at the car park in the village of la Verrerie in La Glacerie. The two trails offer different experiences: the Echovallée has a specified length, approximate duration and difficulty level, while the character of the Vallée du Trottebec route is shaped by its forest tracks and hunting paths.
Theatre and events
The Théâtre des Miroirs in La Glacerie offers theatre, performances for young audiences, storytelling events and concerts. It also offers workshops in artistic expression across dance, music and visual arts. The programme and workshop offerings may change. If you are planning your stay around a particular event, check the dates.
