Avranches brings together manuscript history, historic buildings and gardens. The Scriptorial is dedicated to the manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel; the donjon and basilica offer further historical highlights. With gardens of varied design and a natural area along the Sée and Sélune rivers, there is more to explore beyond the cultural sites. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the opening dates for the collections and the focus of your stay.

Manuscripts and Collections

The Scriptorial is the museum of the manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel. It is located in the old town in a fortified complex with a donjon, part of a former fortress that has been rebuilt several times. In the treasury room, twelve manuscripts are displayed in presentations led by experts; the selection changes every three months. If this part is important to your visit, check the current program in advance, as details may change.

The Bibliothèque patrimoniale preserves 400 manuscripts, including 203 medieval manuscripts from the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. It offers guided tours on the first Wednesday of each month. Since visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information beforehand. The collection and guided tours are a separate highlight from the presentations at the Scriptorial.

City History and Sacred Art

The Donjon d'Avranches is a fragment of the crenellated curtain wall and a remnant of Avranches Castle. The climb offers views of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the city rooftops. This structure therefore offers a glimpse of both the former fortifications and views of the bay and cityscape.

The treasury of the Basilica of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais is housed in a small room that is open to the public free of charge. On display are the relic of Saint Aubert, as well as goldsmiths’ work, liturgical accessories and furnishings. The basilica also preserves the reputed skull of Saint Aubert, bishop of Avranches and founder of Mont-Saint-Michel. The Musée d'art et d'histoire d'Avranches is also one of the oldest museums in western France.

Gardens with Different Features

The Jardin des Plantes d'Avranches covers three hectares on a rocky promontory above the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and offers views across the bay. The Jardin des Passeurs et Hortus offers a different focus: it includes a medieval-inspired garden, an orchard, and beds of medicinal and dye plants. The Jardin des Passeurs et Hortus is open and free to access all year round; check the current access arrangements before your visit.

The two gardens therefore differ in the features described: the Jardin des Plantes stands out for its location above the bay and its three-hectare area, while the Jardin des Passeurs et Hortus is notable for its design and variety of plant groups. This can help you choose a garden focus for your stay based on your interests.

Natural Areas and Route Planning

The natural inventory entry dated June 11, 2024, for the ZNIEFF area “Estuaire et herbus de la Sée et de la Sélune” lists Avranches as part of the area and records its protection as a wetland under the Ramsar Convention. The description places the area at the confluence of the Sée and Sélune rivers and highlights its high diversity of flora and fauna. It mentions a large roosting site for gulls, important feeding grounds for ducks at low tide or depending on the tides, and the regular presence of seals (Phoca vitulina).

For cycling plans, the Véloscénie offers a 38-kilometer round trip from Pontaubault to Avranches. Check the current route before setting off, as infrastructure and connections may change. The Chemin du Mont-Saint-Michel offers a different perspective: it follows the route of the Roman road that linked Vieux-la-Romaine with Avranches via Évrecy and Saint-Sever-Calvados. While the Véloscénie specifies a particular cycling connection and round-trip distance, the Chemin focuses on the historic course of the road.
