Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger
Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger offers several ways to plan a stay focused on architectural history and the landscape. Its historic buildings are spread across Saint-Ouen, the hamlet of Héritot, and the Champ Delaunay area; they date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The former division into independent parishes and the walking routes offer further perspectives on the area. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you are most interested in churches and manor houses, the history of the former parishes, or walking.
Architectural history in Héritot and Saint-Ouen
Notre-Dame d’Héritot is an 18th-century religious building in the hamlet of Héritot. Also located there is the Château d’Héritot, a castle or manor house from the same period. Their shared location and dating make the two buildings useful points of reference when exploring Héritot’s architectural history; they are two distinct buildings.
The church of Saint-Ouen still has blocked round-headed openings, interpreted as a possible sign of a Romanesque building phase. The openings are the physical evidence; their attribution to the Romanesque phase remains an interpretation. The church is accessible only via a field track. Check access conditions before your visit.
The Manoir de Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger is a prominent group of buildings opposite the town hall and is described as the residence of a Sieur de Saint-Côme. The manor house with farm buildings at 25 Champ Delaunay is a 17th-century castle or manor-house complex. The washhouse on the Voie de Cléville is also part of Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger’s small architectural heritage.
The history of the former parishes
Before the French Revolution, Saint-Ouen, Héritot, and Hernetot were independent parishes. Hernetot was annexed to Saint-Ouen after its church was severely damaged by fire in 1790. Héritot was annexed to Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger in 1833. This sequence moves from the former parish structure to two changes that took place at different times: in the case of Hernetot, the damaged church is part of the history of its annexation; for Héritot, 1833 is the key date. This helps distinguish the histories of the two places rather than treating them as a single event.
Landscape and walking
Near Hernetot, the River Dives divides the area into almost equal parts. The 2012 municipal plan highlights wooded paths as a landscape asset and proposed a network of walking trails to promote nature tourism and walking. A walking route from Troarn to Mézidon Vallée d’Auge passes through Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger. The route and the network proposed in 2012 are different resources for planning: one specifies a route through the area, while the other is a municipal proposal. Check the current route before setting out, as route details may change.
