Port-En-Bessin-Huppain lies between two cliffs; its fishing harbor opens onto the sea and the hinterland. For a thousand years, life here has followed the rhythm of the tides and the movements of its boats. This maritime heritage is reflected in the town’s cultural heritage, as well as in its walking routes and guided tours. The landscape above the fishing harbor offers another perspective.

Harbor and historic traces

The Tour Vauban is a fortified structure in Port-en-Bessin. It was classified as a historic monument on April 29, 1948. The Circuit du Patrimoine runs along the quays and through the streets of Port-En-Bessin-Huppain; information panels along the way explain the heritage of the fishing harbor. You can discover the local heritage both at a fortified structure and along a route with information panels.

The Circuit GuidiGO offers a different approach: it is an interactive, immersive digital tour through the harbor streets. It introduces the commune’s historical, cultural and natural heritage. The tour is accessible directly on a smartphone or tablet, subject to the availability of the GuidiGO app.

Themed guided tours

The guided tours focus on a range of subjects. An art tour takes you through landscapes painted by Signac, Seurat and their contemporaries. At low tide, the program also includes shore fishing, during which you can explore marine biodiversity. Art and coastal ecology are therefore covered in different types of guided tours.

Another possible stop is the Bernard shipyard. It is exceptionally opened to the public as part of a guided tour, where the traditional construction of wooden boats is explained. A visit to the shipyard depends on the published tour schedule, and guided tours are also subject to specific dates. If you have a particular tour in mind, plan your visit around the published dates.

Mont Castel and the cliff path

Mont Castel is a site belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral and managed by the Calvados Department. Above the fishing harbor, a limestone plateau lies atop marl and limestone cliffs. A 2 km path runs back from the cliff edge and is accessible via the Chemin de l’Artillerie. Check local conditions before setting out for a walk.

The options differ when it comes to planning: the Mont Castel path is 2 km long, while guided tours depend on the program. You can choose between a route with a stated length and themed experiences whose dates depend on the schedule for each visit.

Visiting the harbor and seasonal dates

The fishing harbor is open to visitors free of charge all year round; access conditions may change temporarily. The Port-en-Bessin Tourist Office welcomes recreational boaters. From April to October, a visitor pontoon with toilets, showers and a dining area is available to them.

A special date in the annual calendar is the “Le Goût du Large” festival: it takes place every year over a weekend in early November and celebrates scallops and seafood. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
