Le Mesnil-Villement: Rivers, Viaduct and Textile History
Accommodation in Le Mesnil-Villement
Le Mesnil-Villement brings together river scenery and transport and industrial history. The Viaduc de la Ligne Falaise Berjou and a weaving mill near the viaduct stand alongside the confluence of the Rouvre, Baize and Orne rivers and a landscape shaped by numerous landforms. A nearby cycling route and long-distance trail also offer different options for planning your trip.
Transport Routes and Industrialisation
The Viaduc de la Ligne Falaise Berjou was built for the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l’Ouest on the Falaise–Berjou railway line. It was commissioned on 15 April 1874. The construction of the railway line helped open up and industrialise the area. The construction of the road to Pont des Vers (D18) in the 19th century also helped open up Le Mesnil-Villement. The two transport routes therefore played different historical roles: the road helped open up Le Mesnil-Villement, while the railway also contributed to the industrialisation of the area.
A Weaving Mill and Its Fabrics
The Pernelle brothers founded a textile company near the viaduct in 1896. The weaving mill produced Vichy and Zéphyr fabrics, among others, for aprons and workwear. The materials used included cotton, Fibranne and rayon. The dates mark two distinct chapters: 1874, when the viaduct was commissioned, and 1896, when the textile company was founded. This places the history of transport routes and textile production in chronological context without conflating the events.
Rivers and Landscape
Le Mesnil-Villement lies at the confluence of the Rouvre, Baize and Orne rivers. The landscape is also shaped by numerous landforms. Three rivers meet in Le Mesnil-Villement, while numerous landforms define the surrounding landscape.
Hiking, Cycling and Local Activities
The GR Suisse Normande long-distance trail and the Vélofrancette cycling route are located near Le Mesnil-Villement. They offer different activities: hiking on a long-distance trail and cycling on a cycle route. If you would like to combine your stay with one of these activities, you can distinguish between the routes according to your preferred activity and plan accordingly.
In connection with the Vélofrancette, KotA’venture offers bicycle hire. The services also include fishing equipment and access to the river. Bicycle hire is therefore explicitly linked to the cycling route; fishing equipment and river access offer a different focus. Availability may change, so please check before your visit.
