La Pommeraye: Château Ganne, Equestrian Culture and Theatre
Accommodation in La Pommeraye
La Pommeraye brings together the medieval complex of Château Ganne, walking routes, equestrian activities and a theatre for performances in a rural setting. There is also an annual medieval festival, a spa and a crêperie. This allows you to consider culture, outdoor activities and other pursuits as different focuses for your stay.
Château Ganne: History and Landscape
Château Ganne includes the remains of a gatehouse dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, as well as three earthen enclosures surrounded by ramparts and ditches. The gatehouse, enclosures, ramparts and ditches form several parts of the fortified complex. If you are interested in the history of the site, you can explore these features together. The Château Ganne archaeological landscape park is also part of the Calvados department’s Espaces Naturels Sensibles network. This means that, alongside the historic remains, the park’s landscape is also a central feature.
Walking Routes and Festival
La Pommeraye is the starting point for numerous walking routes that can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The “Entre Histoire et légende” circular route starts at the Château Ganne car park. So, there is both a network of routes for different ways of getting around and a named circular route with a specific starting point.
A major medieval festival takes place every year on the Château Ganne grounds on the weekend closest to 14 July. If you plan to travel specifically for this event, check the exact date before booking.
Horse Riding: Lessons, Rides and Courses
Écurie Alice & Antoine Castillon offers individual riding lessons for advanced riders, riders with some experience, and beginners, children and adults. The stable also arranges tailored rides and horseback treks, ranging from half a day to a full day or several days. You can therefore choose between lessons and an outing on horseback, and select the duration you want for a ride.
On request, the stable organises riding courses during the week or on specific weekends. The disciplines offered include dressage, working equitation, equestrian shows and trail riding. If you are interested in a course, confirm the date directly with the stable.
A Rural Stage and a Behind-the-Scenes Visit
Théâtre équestre de La Pommeraye is a venue for performances in a rural setting and can accommodate 300 spectators. If you are interested in equestrian theatre, you can also get a behind-the-scenes look in addition to attending performances: visitors are welcomed on request. Arrange such a visit in advance, as it is not available without a request.
Spa and Local Cuisine
Spa du Domaine de la Pommeraye offers a hammam, a sauna, a heated swimming pool at 30°C and a relaxation area. The facilities combine several amenities; the stated water temperature is a specific point of reference if you are especially interested in the swimming pool. As spa facilities can change, confirm what is currently available before your visit.
Crêperie La Route des Crêpes uses local regional products whenever possible and works with local artisans whenever possible. Alongside the spa, it offers a different focus from the historic sites and activities: here, the emphasis is on a meal or a break at the spa.
