Ifs Between Archaeology and Culture
Accommodation in Ifs
Ifs can be explored from several distinct perspectives: the Parc Archéo takes you back to the Neolithic period, a heritage trail uses information panels and an audio guide, and the “Coups de théâtre” cultural season offers a seasonal event. There is also the Grand parcours dans la forêt d’Ifs, with several activities. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus on an archaeological presentation, local culture, a particular theatre performance or outdoor activities.
Archaeological history at the Parc Archéo
The Parc Archéo was created on a protected site where several Neolithic tombs had been discovered. It was inaugurated in September 2022. The site therefore connects the archaeological finds with a presentation of the period. In the information building, you can see a chronological frieze, a display case with Neolithic objects and an animated film about life during this period. These three elements explore the subject in different ways: the frieze places it in chronological context, the objects offer a tangible glimpse of the exhibition, and the film complements the presentation with moving images.
Orientation and digital features are also part of the visitor experience. At the main entrance, there is a tactile map in raised relief and Braille; tactile guide strips are laid along the main paths. An NFC chip at the north entrance provides access to a virtual tour. QR codes on the information panels link to virtual content including images, text, videos and audio guides. These features are located in different places: the map and guide strips are at the main entrance and along the main paths, the NFC access is at the north entrance, and the QR codes are on the panels. Digital features may change.
Discover local heritage on a walk
The Ifs heritage trail begins in front of the town hall. It comprises twelve panels with anecdotes, QR codes and an audio guide. This offers a different way to explore the subject than at the Parc Archéo: here, panels and audio content are the focus of a walking route, while the Parc Archéo has an information building with a chronological frieze, objects and a film. The twelve panels give the heritage trail a clear structure; QR codes and the audio guide supplement the anecdotes with digital content.
Theatre by season and date
The town of Ifs’s “Coups de théâtre” cultural season offers a play every fourth Friday from October to April in the François Mitterrand Hall. Unlike year-round leisure activities, a theatre visit depends on the season and your travel dates. The programme may change from season to season. Check which play is scheduled for your preferred date before you travel.
Activities in the forest
The Grand parcours dans la forêt d’Ifs includes a children’s playground, a fitness park, a sports trail and a permanent orienteering course. It offers several kinds of leisure activity: play, fitness, sport and orienteering.
When planning your schedule, it is particularly useful to note the difference between the seasonal theatre programme and the permanent orienteering course: “Coups de théâtre” is tied to a specific period and a recurring day of the week, while the orienteering course is described as permanent. If you are more interested in history, the Parc Archéo’s displays of objects and film differ from the panels and audio guide on the heritage trail. You can choose what to focus on based on your dates or the type of presentation you prefer.
