Crouay is a hilly commune that extends partly across the Armorican Massif and partly across the Paris Basin. Its hilly setting describes the terrain; the two geological units provide the broader context. The rural landscape includes enclosed pastures, farmland, forests and marshes, as well as a river fed by groundwater. This gives you a focus for planning your stay around hiking, landscapes and local heritage.

Hiking in Crouay

The Circuit des Chaufourniers is a 12 km hiking trail in Crouay. This specific distance helps you decide how much time to allow for a hike during your stay. Fit the trail into your day alongside your other interests: this way, you can make hiking one focus of your trip alongside landscapes, geology and heritage.

Geology and former land use

The “Sinémurien et fours à chaux de Crouay” site combines geological features with the area’s former use. It includes scattered former quarries, some of which have been partly filled in and were used to supply lime kilns. Some of these kilns are well preserved. Sinemurian marl-limestone layers are exposed in the quarries, visible over a height of about ten metres. The area thus brings together the rock layers and the former supply of the lime kilns as two aspects of the site.

Architecture and religious heritage

Crouay’s architectural heritage includes houses with character. The Église de Crouay contains an octagonal stone baptismal font dating from the first half of the 15th century. The church also houses an equestrian statue of Saint Martin made of polychrome and gilded wood. The font and statue differ in material and design: stone and an octagonal shape on the one hand, polychrome and gilded wood on the other.

Crouay cemetery is also home to a so-called Hosannière cross, associated with Palm Sunday processions. The baptismal font provides a link to the first half of the 15th century, while the cross is associated with a religious feast day. Local heritage thus encompasses both specific works of art and a connection to processions.
