Cordebugle: Hiking, Landscapes and Church
Accommodation in Cordebugle
Cordebugle is very wooded and hilly; notable local features include the “De la Marolles au Courtonnel” route and the Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus more on the hike or on the church’s architectural history and furnishings. Both topics offer concrete points to help plan your day.
Hiking the “De la Marolles au Courtonnel” Route
The route is a 12-kilometre, moderately difficult circular walk. It takes about three hours. Its length, difficulty level and approximate duration give you a practical framework for planning your hiking day. Check the route conditions before setting out; one section may be wet in winter.
In Cordebugle, the route runs for 200 metres along the avenue of the Bois de la Roque, then continues along a path. At one point, the church is 150 metres from the route, making the connection between the trail and its architectural history tangible. Further along, the route reaches the Courtonnel valley and crosses a bridge.
The Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul
The church’s design already brings together different forms: the nave is rectangular, and the choir is slightly narrower. A pyramidal slate spire rises above the square bell tower, built from puddingstone. The 12th-century tower has been preserved; the choir also dates from the late 12th century. The nave was built in the 15th century, and the porch and façade were added in the 16th century. The building’s elements therefore span several centuries rather than representing a single construction phase.
The furnishings add another distinctive feature. The high altar has a three-part altarpiece made of carved, polychrome wood, dating from the mid-17th century. Four Corinthian columns divide it; at the centre is a painting of the Assumption of Mary. The coat of arms of a Bishop of Lisieux is also displayed on a pillar. These details complement the church’s exterior architecture with imagery, materials and heraldry.
Landscape and Other Local Connections
The wooded, hilly landscape provides the setting for the hiking route. Another regional feature is the Domaine des Déserts: this four-hectare vineyard is located in Marolles, between Courtonne-la-Meurdrac and Cordebugle. It is part of the surrounding landscape, while the church and the route section described above are specific points of interest within Cordebugle itself.
Bicycles can be rented on site at Le Presbytère in Cordebugle. If you would like to factor this option into your plans, confirm availability before booking. This helps you weigh the local features: the hiking route has a stated length and approximate duration, while the church—with its different construction phases and furnishing details—offers a focus on architecture and history.
