Highlights include the Château de Bény-sur-Mer, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, the Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville and a walking route that starts in Bény-sur-Mer. The historical landmarks span the Neolithic period, the 12th and 13th centuries, and the construction phases of the Château. Another historical detail concerns ALG B-4 airfield and its operating period in 1944. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus more on architectural and garden history, Romanesque architecture, prehistory or a walk.

The Château: Construction History and Protected Areas

The present-day Château de Bény-sur-Mer was built in 1685 by T. Fallet de Bernières on the site of an older building. Fallet de Bernières was treasurer of the church council of Bény. The later extension dates to the second half of the 18th century and should be clearly distinguished from the original construction in 1685. During this phase, two façade bays and a wing at right angles to the main building were added beside the main courtyard. The estate was also expanded with outbuildings containing a cider press, bakery and stables, as well as a chapel. The different construction phases give the Château a sense of history that can be traced through these specific additions.

Part of the Château is listed as a historic monument; the listing dates to 28 October 1998. Its scope extends beyond the residence: it includes its façades and roofs; outbuildings with a coach house, cider press, bakery and former pump; the façades and roofs of the former stables, chapel and latrine building, including its interior fittings; and the façades and roofs of the orangery and adjoining greenhouse. It also includes the main courtyard, kitchen and ornamental gardens, the park with all its enclosing walls, the entrance gate and the gate onto the Voie du Cornu, together with its pedestrian entrance. The park retains its original layout, with avenues and hornbeams. Thus, the landscaped grounds, as well as the buildings, are part of the Château’s history.

The Church and Prehistoric Heritage

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and features Romanesque architecture. Its date places it in a different era from the Château’s construction phases. For travellers interested in comparing historic buildings, there are two distinct points of reference: the Romanesque church and the Château, whose present-day form is based on a building dating from 1685 and later extensions. The Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville extends this timeline into prehistory. It dates from the Neolithic period and was classified as a historic monument by decree on 28 December 1933. The church, château and menhir thus represent different forms and periods of cultural heritage.

Walking and Historical Landmarks

The Bény-sur-Mer & Reviers route is a ten-kilometre circular walk that starts in Bény-sur-Mer; it is classified as easy. The route description was last updated on 23 December 2024. Its length and rating convey two different details about the walk: the distance describes its scope, while “easy” is the stated difficulty category. For travel planning, the route is therefore a clearly measured walking option alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions.

The name of Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery also deserves precise geographical context: despite its name, the cemetery is near Reviers. ALG B-4 airfield was in operation from 13 June to 4 September 1944. These dates place its operating period within a clearly defined historical timeframe and add a further point of reference from more recent history to the older architectural and cultural monuments.
