Discover Verchocq
Accommodation in Verchocq
Verchocq offers several distinct ways to experience the area: sacred architecture, the Château de Verchocq and its park, the village centre, and the natural environment along the upper reaches of the Aa. These themes give your hotel search a specific local focus. The dates associated with the church, south portal and château point to different periods.
Church, chapel and village centre
The Église Saint-Martin consists of a nave and a choir, which probably date from the 15th or 16th century. The nave’s south portal is dated to the late 16th or early 17th century. The nave is the long, main part of a church; the choir is the area by the altar. These two dates help distinguish the building’s different parts rather than reducing its history to a single point in time.
In the hamlet of Gournay, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Miséricorde can be admired from the outside as part of Verchocq’s religious heritage. The chapel has a protected bell. This combination of building and bell adds another sacred landmark to the Église Saint-Martin, without conflating the two churches.
The village centre also tells a story of architectural change: red-brick longères and multi-storey houses shape its appearance. A longère is a type of elongated rural house. These buildings reflect changes in local architecture from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Verchocq’s architectural history is therefore not limited to individual notable buildings; it can also be seen in the structure of the village centre.
Castle history and park
The Château de Verchocq was built around 1810 in the neoclassical style by Georges Malet de Coupigny. The château has an extensive park. Visitors interested in architecture and history can walk near the château, admire its architecture and learn more about its history. Different building types can thus be found side by side in the village: sacred buildings and a château whose style and date of construction are specifically identified.
The First World War adds another historical dimension. From May 1917, the estate of the Château de Verchocq hosted Winston Churchill for 18 months. This episode is part of the estate’s history and is clearly distinct in time from the château’s construction around 1810.
Hamlets and the landscape of the Aa
The Route de Crête connects Verchocq’s three hamlets of Rollez, Gournay and Le Val du Fresnes. It offers a tangible way to explore the village’s layout across several hamlets. The watermill is also one of the sights to discover in Verchocq, adding another local destination to the sacred and architectural heritage.
The upper reaches of the Aa are a defining feature of the natural environment. The official biodiversity description dated 11 June 2024 places the commune of Verchocq within the area “La haute Aa et ses végétations alluviales entre Remilly-Wirquin et Wicquinghem,” a continental ZNIEFF type 1. It describes the upper Aa as a remarkable sub-Atlantic aquatic ecosystem. This gives the landscape its own natural-history focus alongside its architectural history.
When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these perspectives: the buildings offer a glimpse into different historical periods, while the classification of the upper reaches of the Aa puts the ecological character of the landscape centre stage.
