Le Portel offers several ways to shape your stay: its fine-sand beach, the protected coastal area at Cap d’Alprech and its maritime history. There are also seasonal experiences on the water, a museum and activities at Parc de la Falaise. When planning your trip, you might consider whether to focus on time by the sea, the history of the coastal fortifications or a particular experience.

Beach and sea views

Le Portel’s sandy beach is 1.5 kilometres long and known for its fine sand. Cap d’Alprech is a 16.14-hectare protected coastal area that is open to the public; local access rules may change. The path at the cape offers sea views. The beach and path offer different highlights: sand and coastal views are two distinct options to consider when planning your day.

Coastal fortifications and their history

Fort de l’Heurt was built in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte. Alprech Battery was constructed between 1875 and 1880 to protect the port of Boulogne. The structures raise different historical questions: the fort draws attention to its builder and year of construction, while the battery focuses on its construction period and defensive purpose.

Several rooms can be visited in the Alprech fortification. These include the crew quarters, the powder magazine, the lamp room and rooms beneath the traverse walls. Their names make the interior layout another aspect of the visit. Visiting arrangements may vary; check the current conditions before your visit.

Maritime insights and seasonal experiences

The Argos Maritime Museum displays a reconstructed 1950s ship’s bridge, complete with a wheelhouse and radio room. This brings two specific areas of the bridge into focus: ship navigation and radio communications. The museum also offers a virtual reality experience aboard an offshore fishing boat. The reconstructed bridge and the VR experience offer different ways to explore the maritime world. The VR experience may not always be available; if you are interested, check before your visit.

During the summer season, Le Portel’s Barsiers take visitors aboard their Flobarts. These outings are seasonal, and departure times and availability may vary. If this trip is important to you, it is worth checking in advance. Another local tradition associated with Fort de l’Heurt is Le Portel residents’ shellfish gathering. Please take tides and applicable safety requirements into account.

Green spaces and activities

Parc de la Falaise has 27 hectares of green space in Le Portel. The park also has a mini-golf course; check its current availability before your visit. Le Portel’s family centre offers longe-côte (coastal walking) classes. If you plan to take a class, check the current schedule before your trip.

The options also differ in how they fit into your schedule: Flobart outings are available during the summer season, while classes depend on specific current dates. When planning your hotel stay in Le Portel, you can first choose the activities that interest you most and then check the relevant conditions for visiting or taking part.
