Hesdin: Architecture, Literature and Forest Trails
Accommodation in Hesdin
Hesdin combines historic architecture, literary culture and marked forest trails. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can help shape your choice of destination: the town hall and belfry represent the town’s architectural history, the Maison natale de l’Abbé Prévost offers a literary focus, and the forest trails invite you to spend time surrounded by greenery. The weekly market also provides a reason to plan your stay around a particular day of the week.
Architecture and town history
Hesdin’s municipal belfry is 70 metres high. It is part of the town hall and belfry complex, which was built from 1563 onwards; the belfry’s shell was completed around 1581. The town hall itself dates from the second half of the 16th century. It features a Bretèche, which was listed as a historic monument by decree on 10 June 1926. The town hall complex thus brings together several aspects of architectural history: the start of construction, the completion of the belfry’s shell and the later listing of the Bretèche.
The Notre-Dame church was built between 1565 and 1585. It is a Flemish hall church without a transept. In a hall church, the nave and aisles are approximately the same height; the absence of a transept is another distinctive feature of its layout. At the end of the 19th century, Clovis Normand, an architect from Hesdin, restored the church. The Théâtre Clovis-Normand is an Italian-style theatre. These descriptions highlight different architectural styles: the Flemish church design and the theatre’s Italian style.
Another building with a specific date is the riding hall: it was built in 1821 on the Bastion du Marquis. Together with the town hall, belfry, church and theatre, it adds another building from a different century to Hesdin’s architectural history.
Literary culture and collections
The Maison natale de l’Abbé Prévost is a historic monument dating from the 17th century. It offers a guided exploration of its rooms, anecdotes and the writer’s literary world. Visiting arrangements may change, so check the current options in advance. A ceramics workshop opened there in October 2022. If you are interested in taking part, confirm separately in advance whether this is possible.
The Hesdin Museum displays objects from excavations in Hesdin and Vieil-Hesdin, including tools and ceramics. Literary culture and archaeological finds from the town and Vieil-Hesdin therefore offer different points of interest for a stay.
Forest trails and weekly market
Hesdin has more than 40 kilometres of marked forest trails. If you are planning a specific route, it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions. Another landmark in the forest is the Chêne de la Vierge: the nearly three-century-old tree stands near the Carrefour du Commandeur in the Forêt domaniale d’Hesdin.
Hesdin’s weekly market takes place every Thursday, including public holidays. It features fruit, vegetables, meat and fish; the selection may vary from one market day to another. If the market is one of your travel interests, you can take Thursday into account when planning, while bearing in mind that the selection may differ.
For your trip planning, the main attractions can be considered separately: architectural history, a guided exploration of the Maison, forest trails or the Thursday market. Decide which matters most for your travel dates, then search specifically for hotels in Hesdin.
