Saint-Martin-Choquel offers both local and architectural history and an easy hiking option to consider when planning a trip. At the Château, the focus is on its protected status, materials and a surviving detail of its interior. The Église Saint-Martin stands on a medieval motte and connects this site with events from later centuries. Le Champ Lart adds a 4.4-kilometre route to the historical themes.

Château: Protection and Architecture

The Château in Saint-Martin-Choquel is partially listed as a Monument historique. It was listed by decree on 14 December 2012. The protected elements are the façades and roofs, as well as the main staircase. The building is attributed to the architect Sannier Giraud. The protected status identifies specific parts of the Château; its architectural features also give an impression of its materials and design.

The main building, made of Baincthun stone, is simply designed. On the park side, the façade is divided into three sections. Thus, the same building combines a simply described main structure with a divided park-facing façade. These features offer different perspectives: the material describes the building, while the three sections define the shape of the façade facing the park.

Inside, a notable staircase balustrade is the only surviving original element of the interior. This detail adds a distinct perspective on the surviving interior to the building’s exterior architecture. The façades and roofs, the park-facing façade and the balustrade relate to different aspects of the Château: its protection, exterior design and an original interior detail.

Église Saint-Martin: History and Paintings

The Église Saint-Martin stands on a medieval motte. Spanish troops plundered it in 1597; it was restored in the 18th century. The sequence of events therefore runs from the medieval site, through the plundering, to the later restoration. The site and events give the church different historical dimensions, placing its history beyond a single date.

Inside the church are two restored paintings depicting the hunt of Saint Hubert. Both date from before the French Revolution. Their shared subject provides an art-historical perspective alongside the local and architectural history of the church. While the motte, plundering and restoration mark different stages in the church’s history, the hunt of Saint Hubert links the two paintings thematically.
