Beuvrequen: Natural Environment, History and Local Experiences
Accommodation in Beuvrequen
Beuvrequen is one of the five municipalities across which the Basse vallée de la Slack extends. The village therefore offers several ways to shape a stay: the natural environment of the Slack marshes, a long history of water management, a mountain bike loop and activities in the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Beuvrequen, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Landscape and Birdlife along the Slack
The Basse vallée de la Slack covers around 500 hectares. Its defining features include 25 kilometres of river, 11 kilometres of ditches and 50 ponds. The valley is a natural floodplain and a resting place for migratory birds. These figures give an idea of the extent to which waterways, ditches and standing water shape this landscape.
The Sentier les Royons also passes through the Slack marshes and the countryside around Ambleteuse. Numerous bird and amphibian species live there, including the bittern, white stork and corncrake; wildlife sightings vary by season. The route passes through Marquise, Beuvrequen, Wimille, Wimereux, Ambleteuse, Audresselles, Audinghen and Bazinghen. This makes it possible to experience Beuvrequen as part of a longer route whose landscape extends beyond the village.
A VTT Loop and Nearby Trails
The Sentier les Royons is a 31.1-kilometre circular route for mountain bikes (VTT). Its length, circular format and designated use provide clear points of reference for planning your ride. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. If you would prefer a different kind of outing, the beaches of Ambleteuse, Audresselles and Wimereux, the Wimereux golf course and numerous hiking trails are 15 minutes from Beuvrequen. Travel time depends on your starting point and traffic conditions.
Local History: Abbey, Water and Church
The earliest written form of Beuvrequen’s name is Bovorkem. It appears in the records of Saint Bertin in 1043. In the Middle Ages, Saint Bertin Abbey had an agricultural estate here, referred to as curtem de Boverchem. Its meadows were irrigated with water from the Hondecote River, known as La Slack. A carefully maintained channel brought the water in, while another channel carried it away. The irrigation was managed so as not to interfere with the work carried out downstream at Moulin de Lohem.
From its beginnings, Église Saint-Maxime was affiliated with and dependent on Saint Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer. If you would like to visit the church, you can ask for the keys at Beuvrequen town hall. Arrange the key handover locally before your visit.
