Berck: Beach, Dunes and Maritime Heritage
Accommodation in Berck
Berck combines a long sandy beach with protected dunes, cycle routes, and maritime and archaeological history. If you are looking for a hotel in Berck, you can tailor your trip to the interests you want to pursue while you are there: beach and leisure, nature and birdwatching, or culture and history. The following local and themed references can help you make your travel plans more specific.
Beach and seaside leisure
Berck’s beach is twelve kilometres long and has fine sand; it is ideal for relaxation and leisure activities. You can fly kites, kitesurf and land sail there. The beach therefore offers space both to relax and to enjoy several clearly defined leisure activities. When planning, you can decide whether your day by the sea will be devoted mainly to spending time on the sand or to one of these activities. Land sailing also features on the “Parcours de la plage” historical trail, which explores the development of the sport.
Dunes, estuary and birdwatching
Berck-sur-Mer lies in a preserved and protected dune landscape. The trails offer a chance to discover its distinctive flora and fauna. One trail leads to a platform and continues to the Observatoire de la mare de l'Anse; from there, you can observe numerous bird species in the dune landscape. This makes birdwatching a specific nature theme alongside exploring the dune trails.
The Baie d'Authie is a wild, natural estuary landscape between Fort-Mahon, Berck-sur-Mer, Waben and Groffliers. It offers opportunities for walking and exploring expansive natural areas. The two nature themes differ in focus: the dune landscape centres on trails and its distinctive flora and fauna, while the Baie d'Authie refers to the estuary on a larger scale and the walking opportunities it offers.
Cycle routes with different features
The Promenade du Professeur Debeyre is a cycle route shared with pedestrians; it runs along the seafront. The route goes from Esplanade Parmentier to the Baie d'Authie and on to Berck-Ville. From Berck, you can also join the Vélomaritime (EuroVelo 4), a cycle route that runs along the coast.
The routes can be distinguished by their described characteristics: the Promenade is defined by its shared use with pedestrians and the places it passes, while the Vélomaritime follows the coast. You can choose your cycling focus based on whether you want to explore a shared promenade or a coastal route.
Maritime heritage and collections
The restored fishing boat “Marianne-Toute-Seule” is permanently displayed in the courtyard of the Musée Opale Sud; it forms part of Berck’s maritime heritage. As a tangible exhibit, it gives this maritime theme a concrete point of reference.
The Musée de France houses one of France’s richest Merovingian collections, including jewellery, swords and vessels. A permanent collection also features seascapes and scenes of maritime life in Berck. This offers two distinct perspectives for your cultural itinerary: archaeological objects from the Merovingian period and artistic depictions of life by the sea.
Walking trails, architectural history and tradition
The “Parcours de la plage” trail begins at the former railway station, now the Casino. It covers seaside architecture, Berck’s hospital history and the development of sport, particularly land sailing. Its themes therefore range from seaside resort architecture and local hospital history to sport.
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church was built on the site of a former watchtower. Its bell tower, from which the beacon was lit, dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. At the Maison du patrimoine, small groups can enter the lighthouse keeper’s house and learn about the traditional way of life of Berck’s fishermen, as well as see the “L'habit Berckois” exhibition. Visiting arrangements may vary.
Recurring kite-flying event
The Rencontres Internationales de Cerfs-Volants began in Berck in 1987 and developed over the following years into a major recurring kite-flying event. As the event dates vary from one edition to the next, check the dates of the relevant edition when planning your trip.
