Accommodation in Annay
Annay brings together mining history, architecture, and nature and leisure activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Annay, you can plan your stay around two distinct highlights: historical sites and activities around the ponds and marshes.
Mining History and Buildings
The “Camus haut” in Annay-sous-Lens is element 52 of the “Bassin minier du Nord-Pas-de-Calais,” which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012. It is also the last surviving example of the most recent type of miners’ housing built by the Houillères du Bassin Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The building is in poor condition. Its significance therefore links the mining region’s World Heritage status with a distinctive form of housing for miners.
The Saint-Amé parish church is a rectangular hall made of reinforced concrete, with a single-pitch copper roof. Its layout comprises a wide nave, a choir, a sacristy, a winter chapel, a covered patio, and a baptistery. The building’s form, construction material, and roof offer a tangible insight into the church’s architecture; the listed rooms describe further aspects of its layout.
The town’s history also includes clearly dated milestones. In 1110, Lambert, Bishop of Arras, transferred the patronage of the chapel of Annay. The chapel was completely destroyed in 1740 and rebuilt in the town center in 1745. Another historical milestone is the Abbaye de la Brayelle, also known as the Monastery of Notre-Dame d’Annay: it was founded in Annay in 1196. These dates place the histories of the chapel and the monastery in their respective contexts.
Ponds and Activities in the Marshes
The centrally located ponds in Annay are laid out as a recreational area and are used by walkers and anglers. A municipal membership card entitles holders to fish for trout in ponds No. 1, 2, and 3. As local fishing regulations may change, check the current rules before fishing.
The Annay marshland offers the chance to discover the local wildlife and plant life, and is used for walking. The Parc du marais d’Annay also has a disc golf course with nine baskets. The marshland therefore offers nature watching, walks, and a clearly defined sporting activity.
The Annay Disc Golf Club welcomes the public to try the sport. Schoolchildren, families, and younger and older people are all welcome. For people with reduced mobility, it is important to note the exact extent of access: some paths in the marshland can be accessed by vehicle. These details may change; check current conditions before your visit.
A useful comparison of the leisure activities considers both the location and the activity: walks are mentioned for both the central ponds and the marshland. The opportunity to discover the local wildlife and plant life, as well as the nine-basket disc golf course, are specific to the marshland. By contrast, the membership card for trout fishing is valid for ponds No. 1, 2, and 3.
