Notre-Dame de Vicq: construction history and features

The parish church of Notre-Dame de Vicq dates from the second half of the 16th century. It was restored at the beginning of the 19th century, around 1839, and again in the 1960s. The church displays Neo-Gothic features: the main entrance has a pointed arch, and its tympanum contains a sculpted Pietà. Other named architectural features include buttresses and a bell tower. The church’s construction, restorations and architecture offer different historical and artistic points of interest to consider during a stay in Vicq.

Historic routes and cycling routes

The Circuit des Chemins Pavés is an easy route that follows numerous cobbled paths. Some of them are listed as historic monuments. The route passes through landscapes typical of the Scarpe and Escaut plains. Pollarded willows are a distinctive feature of this landscape and provide favored niches for green woodpeckers and little owls. The circuit thus connects the history of the cobbled paths with a landscape in which the habitats of these bird species also play a role.

The Boucle de la Vallée de l’Aunelle is a 48.2-kilometer cycling route that passes through Vicq and can be divided into two smaller loops. It is signposted in both directions with blue and green directional markers. Check the current route and signage before setting out. The Boucle de l’Aunelle has sections on dedicated paths, flat to gently rolling terrain and a smooth surface. It is considered suitable for family outings; route and access conditions may change. This gives you different information to help plan your route: both a specific distance and loop layout, as well as details on the terrain and path surface.

Traditions, finds and stories

According to local tradition, the original site of the village of Vicq was near Trou Montauban. Numerous fragments of Roman roof tiles, sherds of Gallo-Roman pottery and remains of storage vessels known as dolia have been found there. The tradition concerning the village’s former site and the archaeological finds are two distinct points of reference for this place.

Vicq is also associated with a literary story: a tale in the first collection, „Les contes d'un buveur de bière“, is set in the village. It tells of a Vicquelotte, Mother Misère, her dog Faro and a pear tree. The local history also includes Antoine-Joseph Deleau, a former soldier and one of the last survivors of Waterloo. He died in Vicq at the age of 85. After an epidemic ended, the villagers built a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch, in gratitude that the rest of the village had been spared. Together, these stories, people and buildings offer different insights into the traditional associations of the place.
