Saint-Saulve: Architecture, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Saint-Saulve
Saint-Saulve can be explored through its architectural history, walking routes and green spaces, as well as its events and regular market. Its highlights range from individual churches to a trail featuring historical sites; specific distances make it easy to compare the routes by length. This lets you plan around culture, outdoor activities or an event date.
Churches and Local History
The former Church of Saint-Martin became too small, despite its floor area being doubled in 1838. Hamoir then had a new church built in Saint-Saulve, between 1863 and 1865. The Carmelite church of Saint-Saulve was built much later, between 1954 and 1966; it is a remarkable example of sculpture-architecture. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on 7 May 2002.
The Chapelle du Carmel in Saint-Saulve also makes its own architectural statement. It is located behind a gate that is always open; a garden leads you to the chapel, which takes the form of a sculpture. Twelve stained-glass windows in the ceiling filter the zenithal light—that is, light entering from above. The garden setting and the way light is directed add further architectural elements to the sculptural form. Check the access conditions before your visit.
The heritage trail complements visits to individual churches with a series of local sites: around twenty historical information panels lead to places that have been important to the development of the town.
Walking Trails and Parks
The municipal walking programme, Parcours randonnées pédestres, comprises four routes: 4.5 km, 5 km, 7.5 km and 14 km. Maps are available at the town hall, the Salle de sport Coubertin, the swimming pool, the neighbourhood centre and the CCAS. Distribution details may change, so check in advance for current collection points.
Parc urbain du Rôleur has a fitness station, children’s playgrounds and running routes ranging from 500 to 2,500 m. These running distances are shorter than the walking programme routes, making it easy to compare short park runs with longer municipal walking trails.
Parc Fortier has two ponds; a federally affiliated fishing pond with two bodies of water covers 10,000 m² there.
Culture, Events and Market
Espace Athéna is an event venue with 280 seats or standing room for 350. A Travers Chants is a French chanson festival associated with Espace Athéna, held in March. Athéna Blues Festival takes place in November with an international programme. Check the current programme before planning a visit around an event.
The Marché du terroir at O’Centr’Halle brings together more than 35 producers and craftspeople all year round, on the second Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Unlike the festivals held in March and November, the market takes place on a monthly Sunday throughout the year. As market times may change, check the current market day and hours before your visit.
