Cultural history is a natural focus for a trip to Lille: the Town Hall belfry, museums and Vauban Citadel offer different ways to explore the city. Walking routes and markets add to this perspective. Lille has more than ten centuries of history and has been part of the national “Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire” network since 2004.

Belfry and museums

The Town Hall belfry has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005 and offers panoramic views of Lille. The striking tower is 104 metres high; visitors can access the viewing point. After the first flight of stairs, you can take the lift or continue on foot. Check the access arrangements before your visit. The Town Hall and belfry are accessible via Mairie de Lille station on Metro Line 2; check the route before setting out.

The Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse is housed in a hospital founded by Jeanne de Flandre in 1237. Since 1962, it has housed an extensive collection of paintings, tapestries, wood carvings, furniture and regional faience. The Palais des Beaux-Arts displays French and European paintings and sculptures; its collections also include relief maps of regional towns fortified by Vauban in the 17th century. The collections have different focuses: the Hospice Comtesse brings together a diverse range of artworks and everyday objects alongside regional faience, while painting and sculpture are at the heart of the Palais des Beaux-Arts.

Citadel, walks and wildlife

Construction of the Citadel of Lille began in 1667 and took three years. The Parc de la Citadelle is a landmark historical, natural and sporting site. Exhibitions line the walking route through the citadel and its park; programme content may change. Vieux-Lille also has a seven-kilometre walking route featuring seven sights and nine possible activities. Check the route details before setting off.

The Zoo de Lille is located at the foot of the Vauban Citadel ramparts and covers three hectares. It features 77 animal species in six themed areas. The number of species and the layout may change during renovations.

Guided tours and travel dates

The “Lille, City of Art and History” service offers events for tourists throughout the year, as well as guided heritage tours, including in Vieux-Lille. Dates for individual tours may vary; check them before your trip. This makes it easy to distinguish a guided introduction to the city’s history from an independent walk through the park or a museum visit.

The Braderie de Lille takes place almost every year on the first weekend in September; check the exact dates before your trip. During the two-day event, Lille’s streets become a vast open-air market where visitors can browse and bargain. If this event is important to your travel plans, checking the confirmed dates is a useful starting point.

Market and food

Local and international food takes centre stage at the Marché de Wazemmes. The market adds a culinary dimension to the city’s historical collections and guided tours. The selection and market stalls may change.
